Once upon a time I recall seeing someone posting a rather close paint match to the Kato SP Daylight paint but I just can't seem to find the thread now. Does anyone remember or know what the closest commercial paint match is to the Kato Daylight red and orange? I'm back dating a GS-4 to a GS-3 and have to repaint the entire tender and cab as well as replacing a Kato PA-1 pilot with a plow. I THINK it was Tru-Color Daylight red and orange, but for some reason that doesn't sound right. Thanks!
Jeff, I found that Badger model flex was an extremely close match to Kato's Daylight colors. (Is it still available - ?) Regards, Wolf
If Badger ModelFlex is a close match, use a good primer. That brand can be a hit-or-miss for me. I find some colors to be rather translucent and they usually require multiple coats. I think Badger is still available, but it can be more difficult to find online than some of the other railroad paint brands. I have yet to see it in-store, but some of the online hobby shops will have it
Model Master Ford Engine Red or Vallejo Fantasy Scarlet Red seem close to me. Not an SP modeler but the Utah Railways RSD4/5 had a scarlet red stripe.
I don’t know but sub’d to find out, got two TOFC trailers that need to be backdated from silver 54 to mid 53 PMT daylight colors.
Badger model flex with a hint of tamiya flo orange will match the kato color. Just ad a drop of tamiya and mix until you nail it. It is the closest I've been able to come.
Model Flex is still HIGHLY available. I order mine direct from Badger, unless I am in Denver, CO. https://www.badgerairbrush.com https://usaairbrushsupply.com/
