The 4610 was on display at the Southeastern RR Museum in Norcross GA (Northeast Atlanta area) that day. I never managed to catch it out roaming the rails in the many years it was painted that way. There is a history with me and not catching this loco out and about but that is a rant for another time and place.
Near Northgate, ND the Northgate Branch climbs a hogback at MP 18. We shot from a grade crossing toward the train, and turned 180 degrees to shoot the "weed route".
CP 7029(SD70ACU) running solo northbound on train B39(Savanna, IL-Mason City, IA) through Bellevue, IA with approximately 31 cars. November 29, 2020 Most people get drunk, others want sex but as for me, I go Railfanning.
Another scene from the mid-1970s at Deval Interlocking in Des Plaines, IL finds an A-B-B-A set of MILW Fs on a northbound freight. Does anyone know what those angled "deflectors" are for on the cabooses? They're mounted two per side above the end windows. Neat looking trucks under the cabooses too.
I think they are placed to prevent the markers from blinding the crew members looking out the bay windows.
I cannot recall. They were not on all of their cabooses. Those paddles were not really very large, reflectors only, not lit otherwise. I have one packed away in a box.
Mirrors for inspecting the ballast? Not likely, you could just look down from the bay window and get a "closer" view.
They're not just to deflect water from the roof running onto the windows, are they? And thanks for posting the Milwaukee Road pictures. They take me back to the Milwaukee being in my home town here 10 years earlier in the mid-sixties. Doug
