Well-known amongst European railfans: the narrow gauge Harzer Schmalspur Bahnen. A large network of lines in the beautifull Harz mountains, right at the former frontier between West and East Germany. We spent our recent summer vacation in this region and of course, we had to visit one of most famous parts of the network: the line from the old medieval town Wernigerode till the mountain Brocken, once a military outpost of the communist regime. I have made a lot of shots of the steamtrains, but also a few shots of regular passenger trains riding on normal gauge. But the steamers are the most important part of the short movie I have made.
Not a big fan of steam, but this was pretty neat! 2-10-2 locomotives? If I saw right? Interested in seeing more! Nicely done!
So neat - thanks for sharing! I'll add this to my to-do list if I ever get back over there!! Cheers -Mike
Had to watch again! Double headed mallets at the 6:00 minute mark! Never noticed the first time! Agree with Boxcab: stills of the mallet? Again, neat stuff!
sorry a little late now ... You can have a look here https://www.hsb-wr.de/Unternehmen/Fuhrpark/Dampflokomotiven/Malletlokomotiven-99-5901-99-5903/
Nice little operation! It reminds me of what my parents told me about the Jhangeli, a meter-gauge network in Luxembourg. The line running through their village was served by a passenger train that was a feeder for the main north-south line. The tiny little tank engine - similar in appearance to the German ones here - and its train often had difficulty with grades, especially in the fall or in very damp weather. Sometimes the passengers had to disembark and walk beside the train until it got up the hill! Nobody got angry about it - it was just what they had to do to pitch in. They just laughed about it, along with the crew. I like that relaxed attitude.
Nice episode , I think this has never happend here in the Harz mountains , but i'am not sure about. They had problems in January 2019 with a frozen engine: greets mike
