Since I have some time on my hand I started a junk engine for my scrap yard . A logging 2-4-4-2 from two hobbyline 0-4-0 kits .Had to cut away the boiler center to hid the different boiler diameters. will be painting and weathering later today.
I was very taken with the unlikely story of Skookum, having been rolled over into the river and left there (by rights the story should have ended there), the unlikely one-piece-at-a-time rescue by a group of railfans, the years in storage and finally the restoration to operating condition. Since then, I've been kicking around the idea of building a 2-4-4-2 from a pair of Mantua 0-4-0's, but that's definitely a project for the future.
I did not model it after any engine , but remember the engine in your post. Mostly I was bored being stuck in the house and it has been raining every day ,i was cleaning up my train room and was moving boxes ,found these left over from another scrap yard build.
Hmmm... Social distancing must be making people a little crazy. Of course, model railroaders don't have far to go to get there. A couple of days ago, I found myself on Ebay looking at Mantua switchers, but then I came to my senses and thought about the gazillion other projects I've already got. At any rate, very cool. Have you figured out what to do about the boiler yet and have you decided what kind of a drive you're going to use?
Because it is in a scrap yard , it is getting scraped and it started with the boiler center ,or that is the story. Will post the finished project photos later to night
Put in context, I like it. It looks good for what it's for. From your photos, it looks like your scrap yard does a brisk business in scrapping steam locomotives- an ugly but very real part of the transition era.
That's giving me some interesting ideas. When train shows start up again, I'll hunt for some cheap junkers and start populating my scrap yard (I'm pretty much transition era too). Maybe kitbash some working parts - who knows, my scrapper is a pretty good inventor (somewhere between Mythbusters and A-Team...) and he might need a small switch engine for his own use. Model railroading is no end of fun things to do.
