Howdy folks The last days, I've built the first pipe load for my bulkhead flatcars. I use 3/16" I-beam Evergreen profiles and NORTEASTERN SCALE LUMBER 3×3" pieces. The straps are thin strips of insulating tape.
These are special runs from Prairie Shadows. The manufacter are Rapido Trains. Here is the link: https://prairieshadows.com/catalog/product/n-70t-526-bulkhead-flatcar/42 I'll shot a few pics of other variants. Up soon...
For variety try an aluminum foil culvert load. Just wrap heavy duty foil around an appropriately sized bolt and use your fingernail to form the foil to the threads.
Howdy A few days have passed and I could build some pipe loads again. This time the pictures in chronological order: I had the decals printed by a friend. Let's see what comes to mind next ... Thanks for watching! Regards Thomas
Those are cool! I bought some Plastruct I-beams to make a load for a bulkhead flat (ironically enough a MT BC Rail flat!). I like the idea of using tape for straps. I was also thinking ribbon but tape should work.
I'm guessing the spiral wrap is a manufacturing method for a type of pipe. I can't recall ever seeing pipe made like that. What was the use of pipe made that way? USS had its National Tube Works located near here (McKeesport, PA) and I saw a lot of pipe shipped out (usually in gondolas not flatcars) The pipe was either "seamless' or was made from cold rolled steel sheet which was then formed and welded lengthwise
