I approach super-detailing in the same way that I approach landscaping. Both, when well executed, are dang impressive! That said, I'm content to just sit back and enjoy my neighbors work.....
Not at all, and let it be known I'm just as impressed with what you have done in your modeling endeavors. Your layout and the documentation of it has inspired many of us on Trainboard. Just goes to show how great of a community this is and how we can learn from so many talented modelers.
I just go along with what artist Bob Ross said," It's your world your the creator" so I put a Digitrax SDXN136PS Sound FX in a cheap B'mann 0-6-0. Runs great, and the sound is good. The decoder capacitor is in the slope back, the speaker w/baffle is in the tender with lots of .030" holes drilled between lumps of coal. Head light and slop back light works....
How did you get the low nose geep? Did you cut down yourself? If so, do you have how you did it. Or did you get a low nose shell from CMR or some other. Nice work, Bob Shaffer
Bob, I chopped the noses and used Atlas SD26 cabs. I detailed the build in the Nov/Dec issue of N Scale Railroading magazine.
Well I like running my trains, and to be honest, none of the super details are visible when the locomotive is in motion, because I am watching the train, not the cars or locomotive. That said, I do have many super detailed units that were done by others, and they are nice to look at. But I do not need that on every locomotive I have, if I did I would never have time for anything else. So I adopted the mantra - if you can clearly see it on the train running at full speed, then yes, otherwise spend the time and the money making the trains longer.

I have been both routes of super detailing and only partial detailing. I have found that if the loco gets handled a lot that the super detailing becomes an issue and have even lost parts in a foam lined box designed to store them in. Instead I have settled on just adding a few parts where needed like a headlight casting or a winterization hatch and maybe MU and air hoses on pilots.
