Had this idea about 3 years ago. I wanted to animate my z scale (1/220) Ohio high cab diesel locomotive crane that I designed and had rapid prototyped. Thought it would be a good project to do while visiting my 86 year old Dad last week. We work well together so it only took us a day to put together. This is a proof of concept. I wanted linear motion for the hoist so that the hoist line would not get tangled up while the crane upper works rotates infinitely in either direction. So we used two old RC plane servos that we gutted their electronics. Final version will have a painted crane with boom rigging holding up the boom. I’ll also get some momentary center off double pole double throw switches that will make for smoother operation. Also need to add more sand block resistors to slow it down a bit more. Video showing how it works can be seen here: Thanks, -Jon
Good job, Jon. That will make an awesome mini-diorama. It would look good in my junkyard. What a great way to spend a visit with your father, too. Jim
A very nice job done. I have aa idea toi have sand excavator working on one of modules - definitely your job will be an inspiration.
Glad you like it! Animated excavator would be really neat. I've seen one in N scale but just the top upper works rotated around. Would be great if you could animate the boom and dipper stick.
That might be a challenge. I was thinking about rotating cab. I will have to examine 3D model a have ...
Nice work. You are on the right track. It can be done. I posted a video of my Z scale animated track hoe "Excavator" on your facebook post. With a little help from a microtroler you can automate its movements like i did or add joysticks to control each movement yourself. David
Outstanding piece of equipment looks really cool operating. And for a Z scale model that's even better! Jon your work is always great!
Thanks everybody, glad you like it! Will post an update when I get a chance to upgrade the controls and slow it down with more resistors.
