Well we've about done it again. the weekend is so close you can feel it. Grab some cold tea (or coffee if that's your thing), a donut, a chair and gather 'round, it's time to discuss the weekend. Saturday: Once again, a Friday off gives me a head start on the weekend. My day will be spent finishing up the decals on the DRG&W GP30. My goal is to get all the decals done and a nice flat coat applied so I can move on to final assembly and ship this beauty home to her owners. In between decals, I'll be cleaning up the common area then organizing all the N scale I have. Every boxcar, locomotive, building and scenic item will be placed into three piles A: Keep, B: Sell, C: Dispose of. The time has come. Saturday I need to do a few domestic duties as well as home repairs. Jess is on the list again too as she needs some little bits of standard maintenance. I also hope to finish the B&M module storage/transport case so it is ready for the next show. Sunday: As you know we have had our Beagle Lucy for a year now, next weekend is her birthday. She has been a great joy in our lives, so much so that we have determined she needs a brother or sister. For the past few weeks, we have been working with a Beagle rescue and this weekend might be the weekend we bring home another member of the family. I'm not sure which direction we are driving to yet but it may enTAIL a Beagle! So how about you? What do you have planned for the weekend? I hope to get more done on my Lark. Painting the 22 roomette. And start construction of the 10-6's. Perhaps, start on the Lark club. Adding the details to the cars that are painted and decaled. Hope Y'all have a great weekend, Wolf
This morning I picked up a quart of my favorite paint color, for use on outside (public) faces of modules. Will see if more action is forthcoming....
Probably work on buildings this weekend. I am continuing to "revive" buildings that were on my former layout for inclusion in the current version. Also, I have started a South River Model Works building "H W Meyers", I hope to work on that. I have gotten most of the walls done on the main building. This weekend, I hope to finish the foundation and start attaching the walls.
Hope to make some progress on the control panel for my new N Scale road. As with many modeling ventures, I'm learning as I go and am adding design enhancements. Just got a package from Newark Electronics minutes ago with three toggle switches (SPDT, DPDT and 3PDT) I want to test. They all have paddle-shaped handles (which I like, easy on the fingertips) and all three look exactly alike from above the panel. An orderly and consistent appearance is what I'm seeking. Mine will be an old skool DC road (I love things electrical, so find wiring fun), but I'm including easy adaptability for DCC if I move in that direction someday.
Further work on my K3! The cab shell is done, and the pilot is done; now for front end details, steps, walkways, and so on. Sadly, I need to wait on some more parts from Bachmann and some sheet brass before I can do a whole lot more: I may also decide my Spectrum 2-8-0 is better as an Erie loco than a Western Maryland H9, as the resemblance is very, very striking, a few minor changes... Not in stone yet of course. This 2-8-0 isnt mine; mine is painted (badly) for CP. I just didnt want to take a picture of it just now. The tender would be a pain though... might be a good 1st scratchbuild in brass and styrene?
The K3 is looking nice! You have an exceptional eye for steam detail and conversion -- the Spectrum 2-8-0 does indeed look Erie-esque in a big way. I have the book Erie Power (c. 1970, Alvin Staufer). I'll check and see if any other class of (simpler) tender was used with the Erie's 2-8-0s.[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the kind words about the k3! As it's the first such build, I am learning a lot and trying things more than once. I may try and redo the cab in brass. I think I can do better! Regarding the tender, thanks much for checking! Erie had lots of these stubby vandy tenders, so I'd like to try to build one. Diagrams aren't easy to find though. Erie Power is the next of the power series I want to buy, as Erie is easily my favourite "large" northeast railroad. Still gonna do an h9, but that one will be a much more complicated project!
Stauffer's book definitely shows Erie 2-8-0s with stubby square tenders like the 1679 carried: Collection Of Gary Everhart, 06/01/1940 [www.rrpicturearchives.net] But, yes, the Vandy tenders are high on the coolness scale. The Erie must have had short turntables. Your crowing achievement could be a Triplex ….. …. complete with stack on the tender for the rear engine.
Unfortunately boiler and firebox technology of the time couldn't meet the demands of three engines. Though it would make an eye-catching model. This is an interesting Wikipedia article on Triplex design and use.

I think I'll finish these few straight locos and then maybe try a B&O 2-8-8-0. Maybe once that's all under my belt (if i succeed) i will think about something like a triplex. Gearing all 3 sets of drivers would be *interesting* And yeah, I think the Erie, at least before the Vans got hold of it, must have had either very short turntables, or an overabundance of water stops and a laid back schedule to allow their use...
