If it is Black Widows you want, in my world SP purchased their own paint manufacturer and the guy who went to bloody nose was fired!

And oh,they were never assimilated by the Borg

Finished up the last of three SD9E's for a friend of mine. SP 4317, summertime version with icicle breaker down and standard wipers.

I still refer to the 'bloody nose' paint as primer (so they could paint black widow or daylight over them)...and I still don't accept the merger as ever happening.

    Joe, that SD9E is GORGEOUS!!!(y)(y)(y)

I might have inquired on a previous build, but what are you using for the end ladders? They're perfect!

Also curious about the light packages including the square UDE light. Are they 3D printed?

I wonder what SP locomotives would have looked like if after the merger with DRGW, they switched to DRGW colors............

    Thanks guys!

Jeff, I promise the next one will be black widow, although a little worn out.

Russ, the ladders are Gold Medal Models freight car ladders, the narrow ones on the fret. The lights are Sunrise copies, except the UDE light is a part I made from scratch and cast.

Heard from the Eugene shops that the Toledo Hauler was taking a 3800 out to Toledo to replace the switcher that is due for it's 92 day inspection. I decided to head out to a couple of trestles and grab some shots.

The latest project to come off of the bench (and the first locomotive project I have finished for myself in almost 10 years...). SP 3857, black widow as promised. Working from photos/research as always, I started with an old run Kato/Atlas unit that has been in one drawer or another for most of my adult life. I was after the heavier frame and better mechanism as the Toledo Switcher handles a lot of cars with one unit. Aside from all of the parts that were added, the frame was modified to give room for a decoder and three surface mount LEDs/resistors. Amazing how much heavier it still is than the newer China versions. To make switching a little more user-friendly, I decided to use N scale couplers instead of Z scale which I usually use on locomotives.

A few interesting things about the prototype unit, the steam generator equipment was still there, but had been disabled, and the reverse mounted Nathan M3 that the units from this delivery were equipped with.

    Joe,
Great job on the "Cadillac"! Wondering what you used to build the trestles? I need to build a "Ballasted Deck" low bridge and your trestles look just like the ones in the SP "Common Standard" Vol 1 book. Thanks in advance!

They are Gold Medal Models freight car/industrial ladders with .020" styrene "feet."

Mike, I based my trestles off of those plans. The pilings were cut from Midwest 1/8" dowel, their dowel is actually about 3/32" which scales out to around 16." A little big, but very sturdy, plus buying enough 1/16" dowel would have cost me a small fortune. The sash/sway braces, stringers and ties were all cut from 1/16" square basswood. The bridge cords are three strips of 1/8" x 1/16," one strip of balsa with two strips of basswood laminated to either side. I used some 1/8" balsa for the pile caps. I made a pin jig with finishing nails to set the piling angles. The abutments were made mostly from 1/16" basswood measured off of the plans, but I did add a few more boards to the bottom. I assembled most of it with CA, but used wood glue when I laid the ties down. I drilled holes in the braces and used .012" wire for the "bolts," dipping it in CA first and clipping it off after. I bought a bunch of wood at Orchard Supply Hardware before they closed our store since they carried most of the Midwest products, but most shops that sell RC airplane stuff and Hobby Lobby carry a lot of it too.

This probably won't matter much since you need a ballasted deck trestle, but one thing I do recommend for an open deck is cutting some 1/16" square strips of PC board and adding one every 3/4" or so when laying the ties. I used only contact cement on the two in the photos and I am starting to have issues with the rail. The last trestle I built, I added PC ties and it made a world of difference.
