Well, after reading the instructions 10 times or more and watching a few YouTube video's it looks like it is time to get started on the project. Haven't put together a model in over 10 years maybe longer. I did learn on a video to install the windows & shutters while the pieces are flat instead of after putting all the wall's together like the instructions show. I know this is rookie for a lot of talented modelers here, but it has been awhile. Luckily it was on open box kit I got really cheap and I appear to only be missing a chimney. After some practice with some refinery structures I need to glue things back on, I am jumping in. Wish me luck, gonna try to take photo's and video's of the process! I hate to paint so if this goes well, or even close to well, already painted kits will be what I get in the future. After all it's for the C&L ( cheap layout ) N Scale railroad Any help or suggestions appreciated!
I agree with mounting windows and doors while they are flat on a work surface. They don't have to be still in the sprues, just flat. Re: painting, if you plan different colors for different parts or areas, paint before assembly...AND before window/door installation. Aside from that, I love a sharp X-Acto #11 blade for cutting, removal of sprue nubbins, and everything else for that matter. Have a blast, it's so much fun when you look at the finished product, and can say "Gee, I just made that...WOW!"
Yeah, thanks everyone. Have the work bench ( table ) ready, the Xacto knife, and something I have never had before. I lighted magnifying glass on a swivel stand, freaking amazing. I'll take a picture of it too. Have no idea even when I was young why I didn't have one of these. Next while dry fitting and luckily reading the instructions ( which I never do usually per the man code ), many times, I noticed that it has an area for no windows and that in fact there are not enough, and my question is why? Unless the area is covered when assembly, but it does not look that way!. I could easily screw this up by putting or not putting them in the wrong place. I am very confused right now and just started Oh I see it will be covered and also I need to go into super slow motion as I think I forgot a door already. Nothing is getting glued until a dry fit for pretty much everything. This is suppose to be relaxing And the dry fit think I am missing a door here Yeah I know crappy glue, might be making a Hobby Lobby run if the few items don't work out with this glue! Gonna try and make it work as I am using a sewing needle to apply the glue!
Your magnifying work table lamp is what has saved me for at least 40 years, probably longer. I like your slow careful approach.
Yeah I agree wish I had used one years ago. Instead of photo's I am just linking the playlist for the build. Pretty much done except a few details. I am really happy with it. Now I can't wait to do another one of the Model Power kit's because of the molded in color's. I know they look clean & like a plastic model but I like that kind of look! As for the extra sprue, sometimes a kit will call for more of a certain bit than is on a single sprue, and it's easier to throw an extra in than it would be to design and produce a special one just for that kit. Parts box fodder.
Don't throw anything away, especially the blank sprues after completion. Can't count the number of times I've gone into the "junk" box to make something that had been left out of a kit, or some nit-picky thing needed out on the layout. Leftovers from wood kits are even more useful.
Almost done just have to add the fence for the most part. It was a lot of fun after I got over the stress of figuring out how everything was suppose to be put together and how to dry fit things Shopping for another Model Power N Scale building or something similar that is molded in color's. I was always super stressed and did not enjoy buildings I had to paint, but this I did enjoy! Having said that I have always wanted the Woodland Scenics Town & Factory set, so I need to get one WS building and see if I still suck at painting. If I do I'll save myself money from not buying the Town & Factory kit But these molded colors kits are a joy! I also forgot the gutter spouts too and they are so tiny! Here is hoping I can get them on without breaking them!
Some mock testing on the layout! I like it, of course it needs a family to move in, and other small details in the future. It's Grandma living next door to the Sullivans, I think!
Great job in2tech ! I see you got the Model Power picket fence too. I didn't know those houses were offered as kits, just seen them as built ups. Picked up a few beat up ones along the way and always found them to be a clever design with all the variations from basically the same structure.
Yeah there are kits and built-up's it looks like. I think sometimes the built-up's are under a different name, like the Jackson House, I think. The Model Power Grandma's kit I got was opened, so I offered them an amount and they took it. It had the house, picket fence, base, piece of green grass, and it was a bonus kit with supposedly a Signal Bridge, Sign's, & Telephone poles, but all I got was the telephone poles. I think it had been a return immediately after purchase some time in the past, cause only thing off spurs was the chimney which I am missing one! It was really cheap compared to ones, but now I want another Model Power kit in molded colors. Here it is and the box it came in: Only thing I can figure out for the base is if someone wants a diorama cause it's too big for most layouts, or mine at least
The white and yellow look OK, some of them came with what I thought where some distracting colors and re-painted them. Here is a country store building I made up using two of the shorter sections. The windows and doors are great to keep around for scratch building projects and I've always thought Model Power should offer those as a separate set by themselves.
Yeah at this point I am just a build as it comes type person. Your's looks amazing! Nice work, a kit bash I guess?
Eventually an airbrush will add to your creativity. In the meantime, your G'Ma's House is a neat creation. Well done.
