My first trip on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, in about 30 years! Last time I was up, I was doing volunteer work, through Railroad Club! Was a perfect day to ride! Mid 70's maybe. Thanks for those, Keith. That is a truly fascinating ride to take, kind of scary going across the devil's gate viaduct. Gosh, it has been 23 years since I had that experience.
From a Flickr post: Georgetown Loop Railroad # 140 diesel locomotive (General Electric 52-ton U6B) This is a 52-ton, end-cab, narrow-gauge, road-style switcher engine on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado, USA. It was built in 1956 by General Electric and used in Plaster City, California as U.S. Gypsum # 1403 (www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2384121). From 1992 to 2004, the unit was used by the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Colorado as # 140. The engine was acquired by the museum in 2004. The engine model is a General Electric 52-ton U6B, but it is slightly different from true U6B units. It has been jokingly referred to as a "U5.9B". The "GB&L" lettering on the cab below the roster number stands for the Georgetown, Breckenridge & Leadville Railroad. Not sure when, or how the Loop acquired the #140 from the CRRM.
Rode across the bridge, on the front of a Tie cart, with a 2x4 used as braking device! Then chained to end of train, and pulled back uphill to SilverPlume. This was 32 years ago, when I volunteered for the summer! Plaque and certificate to prove! Just realized it was the summer of 1985, that I volunteered! Friend accepted on my behalf at the time, as I was living in Georgia when plaque/certificate was presented. Certificate: Plaque: The 1985-30 is the year, and the volunteer hours worked that summer.
