Another new switching layout

    I built this in N scale for my son back in 2007. Dimensions were 16"x6'. He had a absolute ball with it!! Until he lost interest in model trains. If I recall I made a post here about it around that time frame.

    That's good to know someone has experience with this one. I tried to look through the archives and couldn't find any pics like you referenced. Maybe you could post a link to them?

    I've been working on the track plan and have come up with this one in N-Scale 2'x8':[​IMG]

    I'm still working on the details of staging and some other aspects like making the mainline work for a free-mo module if I ever have the chance, but it's coming along.

    Soon as construction starts I'll start my own layout construction thread to follow.

    I have been working on things quietly and have even modified this plan a little, but didn't want to start a new thread so adding to what's already here. Also, changing the dimensions to 12ft long x 2ft wide, in three 4ft modules for transport.

    Was looking at things and wondered what would happen if I flipped everything from this:

    Curious if you guys have any opinions on which looks better? Operationally, they're the same but they each have a different feel.

    Worth putting the grain elevator between the main and the spurs and have that be the front edge. your mainline would sort of bow awat from the viewer that way.

    The previous pics were as if you were looking at the layout as oriented.

    Do you mean flipping everything like one of these and moving the large elevator to the other side of the tracks?

    If you move the elevator in between the main and the two elevator tracks it would create a view block for locos heading off that side.

    On the other end you could put some trees there and hide where the main dead ends.

    Then your lumber yard track could parallel the main thus the actual reach would be better then the reach for the elevator track on the other plans.

    Vertical view blocks between you and the trains can be sort of fun as they add depth to the scene.

    Do you need two silo's/ complexes?
    One should be adequate, and due to height all at or near back.
    View block? Why, since the train can never 'depart' the scene there's little point trying to hide it. Angle a bulding or trees in front of it to create a 'valley' view, but not much more.
    I'd bring the LPG company closer to the 'urban' area and central between front and back- as its a lower building profile, this could be the view block.
    The cement plant can become another half-sided rear wall if you curve the road around to match and parallel the track off to the right.
