I have no sound. F8 isn't toggling sound. Bell and whistle, have nothing. Runs fine. My thought is to reset it. There is nothing in the documentation. Erm .. also. My Bachmann FA1 doens't have sound - and I worked a bit with it before realizing - yes, dummy, it doesn't HAVE sound. I know it's only me that's likely to be caught in something like that .. but still .. ;-) My Intermountain SD40-2 came with a bad speaker - no sound.

Yea .. CV8=8 usually works - it IS the manufacturer's ID, but when set to 8 it performs a reset, then returns to the original setting.
That is only correct for less than a handful of manufacturers (e.g., Digitrax, ESU, etc.) and I don't think Bachmann is one of them. Different manufacturers use different numbers dropped into different CVs for a factory reset.
The Bachmann Berk uses a "SoundValue" decoder made by Soundtraxx. If you read the manufacturer ID in CV8, it will be 141, which is the Soundtraxx identifier. All Soundtraxx decoders implement factory reset via CV8=8 (you can also use CV30=2 in Tsunami decoders; not sure about other Soundtraxx decoders, like the older DSD's). Ouch, reading this shows how complicated converting to DCC would be for a DC Dinosaur with 70 years operating experience. I just joined a club/museum that operates with Digitrax, and thought maybe operating my layout with DCC would be fun. But now I realize there are a lot involved with programming controllers, converting non-DCC ready locomotives, and replacing a perfectly good DC power controller with a DCC power source and controller(s). Then there's converting DC blocked trackwork to operate with DCC. Nah, I think I'll focus on adding more scenery to a layout that operates reliably (usually) with DC, and instead use the money needed for conversion taking trips on Amtrak and VIA around the US and Canada.
Ah! I didn't realize it was a sound decoder made by Soundtraxx so it would be CV8 = 8 for a reset then. (Yes, the original post has a Soundtraxx link but some how I missed it!!!! Doh!)
It IS complicated, and sometimes messy. I have several DC locomotives I'd like to run on my new DCC system, but they sit idly in line waiting for me to convert them. BUT .. the control is fabulous, and the sound .. oh my, they had me at "chuff". However. I'm building from scratch, so everything is new. If I had an established road - I think I'd be far more hard pressed to make the decision to move to DCC. .
My layout is not that big and it has no block controls. I do have a bunch of DC stuff lying around waiting to be converted as time and money allows. However, I kept my DC controller. If I want to run DC stuff, I just swap out my Zephyr. Two connections to either DC or DCC controller and I'm in business. I know the Zephyr allows you to run a DC loco on address 00 but I prefer real DC instead of the potential hazards of address 00.
Yea, I might do the same. Most of my DC stuff is fairly specific - an old Geep that I love, an SW1500 that's being remotored, lots of old equipment with more emotional than technical value. So, it's available for taking pictures and doing scenarios - I just get it back off the layout for running! Of course, right now I'm in the midst of building said layout, so with as much loose ballast around as there is, I don't run many trains! Once the majority of the track is "safe" again, we'll see. .
