I'm visiting my daughter and family in Bedford, Virginia. Last night they took me to Liberty Station, the old Norfolk and Western station that's been converted to a restaurant. Good food, good prices, and they had a fair amount of memorabilia around. Up on the wall behind our table was an original dining car menu from the Powhatan Arrow. Worth a visit.

Yes, that's a very wide platform. Is that some sort of train order signal just beyond the canopy? Looks perhaps like a lantern hung by pulley and rope.
It is possible that is a signal. Train order, I would doubt. While they might have copied orders there, they really would not need one at that station.
