Wish I could have gotten a slightly better angle of it, while it was in town! Wonder if it could be an ex IC unit? Couldn't see a road name in any way. Wonder if it could have been lettered for OMLX - OmniTrax Leasing. Oh well, something else interesting will come along again one day.
Gotta love Colorado weather!! Tuesday, 2/21/17 Local headed to Lyons. About 75* Same units, by depot today, Thursday 2/23/17 About 30*, and blowing snow! Wednesday weather was same as Tuesday.
Here are two photos from Hearne, Texas that I took in 1992. The turn table is long gone. You can see the old SP/Mopac union depot down the tracks on the right.
NB BNSF empty "Stinky" at MP26.4x, Sumner WA. Love the power consists that BNSF can still cobble together!!
When CSX installed PTC on the former SAL main through South Carolina, dozens of new signal locations appeared to augment replacement signals in old locations. North of Columbia, the line sees only ATK's Silver Star, a daily through freight in each direction and an as-needed local. As over-signaled as the line now seems, the work has provided new photo locations everywhere I look. This was taken today at another spot where no signal existed before:
I also enjoy that railroad lingo tends to be precise and brief with a large dollop of Railroaders wry humor and historical perspective.
A CSX city local in Montgomery, AL was (and may still be) known as the Bum and somewhere I recall reading about a job known as the Dirty Shirt.
Nearly 44 Year Old SD-40-2 NS 3238 takes a rest this Sunday in Columbia, SC. Built for SOU with the same number. That obnoxious phone pole has to go away!
Yep, it's either Photoshop or a chain saw... the fun with a chain saw is that if you're holding one with a slightly maniacal look on your face, people tend to give you a wide berth... Those SD40s and SD40-2s are durable beasts. Quebec-Gatineau Railway has several SD40-3s, which are basically ex-CN SD40s rebuilt and updated, and still going strong despite being around 50 years old. QGRY has a lashup of three 40s that are assigned to the Montreal-Gatineau line, and frequently pass through my home town, sometimes as I'm standing on the platform waiting for the commuter train. That's an awesome experience to have 9000 hp going by just a few feet away. Only Alcos could beat that!
Here is one from last summer. An eastward empty BNSF Earthworm. Crossing the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, about to enter Coram, Montana:
I almost have to wonder how long it may be until we start feeling nostalgic for that piece of scenery as many now do for the old telegraph lines...
Thanks John! I think I'll send my pictures to you guys for editing, especially all of my roster shots taken at this spot.
Outstanding shot BoxcabE50! My hands would be shaking from buck fever if a composition like that appeared in my lens. Thanks for posting it.
In the 70s I was between Laramie & Rawlins, WY chasing trains on the UP when I saw a "mail train" (UPS ToFC) eastbound with FOUR DDA40x's and a single "Fast Forty" 8000-series SD40-2 in the middle. That's 29,400 hp ! The earth moved. They were all pulling hard and fast. I have no idea what the hurry was. P.S. I had pix but my EX scattered my slide collection for spite.
