This is a first of many videos on my attic finishing project to build my home layout. I will be posting these all to my personal YouTube channel, to keep them separate from my woodworking channel. Thanks for watching!
Toward the end, (about 3:35) did I see behind you where the entrance is for this space? Working around that will be interesting to follow.
Yes, you did. Currently have a drop down ladder. I have designed a hinged hatch that will drop down on top of that when upstairs so you can work and walk on it without fear of dropping to the ground floor unexpectedly We're looking at options like spiral stairs to possibly replace this, but space is a premium, so we're not sure if we can make that work.
So the dimensions are blurred (for some reason) in the export image from my CAD software, but I have about 24" to either side of the hatch opening: EDIT: Screenshot the image and uploaded that in the place of the other image. Much clearer now.
Cool. I was curious, wondering about getting things in and out of that space, (such as furnishings, lumber), if the layout came right up close to the opening.
I won't lie and say it's great. In all honesty it will be a pain to work around, but it's my only option right now. Furnishings will be minimal and probably limited to what we can bring up un-assembled and assemble in place. A good example is the futon couch we're looking at. No way we could get a traditional couch up there without some serious destruction of the couch first. Tables, chairs, ect, can all be folded up or broken down to the point that we can get them up there. Plan to have most of that stuff up there before the layout assembly begins. Minimize what we have to bring up after the fact.
Welcome to the attic layout club. I have pretty much the same thing going on. Above my garage. The room is about 9' X 22'. My layout is 9' X 14'. Just after starting the layout More recently Thanks, Wolf
Wolf, very nice! I think I have a little more width and head room, but we're basically dealing with the same setup. My layout will be a horseshoe, so I don't have to deal with any duck-unders. Plus, it should work nicely around our access hatch. At least until we figure out another method to get up there. I'll have an update video this week.
Update video on the attic project. Building the main dividing wall between the train room and the TV/Game room:
Been a while since I have posted an update on this. This last month we built and installed the attic stairs. I have a new video coming in a week showing the new passage way we framed in for these stairs, as well:
How are you heating & cooling this attic space? A bunch of the attic layouts I've seen were almost unusable in the summer months. HVAC is a major concern to be reckoned with. Insulated door into the garage storage space will be needed.
We have two single unit mini-split HVAC units going in. One for each room. Both units are cooling and heat-pump capable.
Based on the attic stair video alone, your bench work will absolutely kick a$$. Seriously like your "toys."
Thanks! I can't wait to get to that point. We're so close. Drywall, taping and mudding next. Not my favorite part
