Need Info about Red Caboose Autoracks.

I'm still waiting for some D&RGW autoracks to arrive. I only bought the ones with the 'fixed' closed ends... but... I am curious about the open end units. My understanding is that they come with a closed end that can be removed an replaced with parts to imitate an open autorack being loaded. I think that would be a nice option to have.

Since I already ordered the fixed closed end variety... are the open end variety made with different road numbers????

Okay... let's rephrase this...

Those of you... which have received the first runs of Red Caboose autoracks... do the 'fixed' end cars have the same roadnumbers as the 'open' end cars?

Geez...
based on the replies to this thread... has anyone even purchased any of them???

The following is a reprint from Red Caboose' N scale section dealing with autoracks.

[qb]
Quote:
Does your auto rack have open end doors?

If the modeler wishes to have open doors on the car, a limited number of cars will be available with the option of having open doors on the 'A' end of the car, only. This option can not be easily added to to the brake 'B' end of the car without some modification, by the modeler, to the mechanical brake housing.

The open door option will have road numbers that match the numbers on the car. There will be 12 different numbers for each road name. The cars will come with the closed door installed which are easy to change. The car has been designated with it's own item number and must be ordered with that number to get the open door option. They will also be available in 3 - packs. See car listing for numbers.

Can you see through the side of your auto-rack like on the prototype? You will with this one. Does your auto rack have corrugated sides as found on the prototype? This one does.

More information regarding this car, pricing, options, and road names will be added to the site shortly. This one was worth waiting for!
[/qb]

I'm still not too sure if they mean that the cars with the open door option has different road numbers... I'm guessing NOT... and that the only difference is an extra-interchangeable piece will be included in the 'open' end option version. Just thought you might want to know.

According to one of Trainboard's sponsor train shop's website, the numbers are the same.

The above post is correct, the cars come with 12 different road numbers. The closed and open door models are both produced with the same 12 road numbers. The only difference between the models is the inclusion of the optional end doors, otherwise they are the same.

Thanks for the confirmation!

Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of the Micro-trains Bi-level enclosed racks with these Red Caboose Bi-Level enclosed racks?
If so... please indicate a link to that thread.

I've been buying the MTL autoracks since they were realeased about 3 years ago. They look good and are not as expensive. Are these really 'better' looking than the MTL versions.

I think they are, but not enough to go sell your MT collection. Just only keep one number of each of your MT's and buy RC from here on out. (and MT if they do a particular scheme you want) Of course, they are different prototypes so having both is a good thing.

I would have answered you but we were on the road to a show and did not have access to my username or password on the laptop.

All that info is on our Red Caboose pages.
