Exactly- that's why I put the disclaimer in the GP38 announcement It's just kinda hard to see. I fixed that by boldfacing the note- thanks for pointing that out [img]smile.gif[/img]

After looking at the 38-2s, I am somewhat dismayed- Rock Island DID own GP38-2s, but they were all in bankruptcy blue, not red & yellow. No telling what the "Rockheads" will do.... [img]graemlins/shakehead.gif[/img]

But overall, it's a pretty good haul. I'd start looking for the best price I can- those suggested retail prices are in the Kato range :eek:

Yes, a few years back, someone did produce a model (can't remember the type, but think it might have been a GP7, or even if it was N or HO), that was non-dynamic equipped. Then it had in the box a moulding of the DB blisters and roof fan that snapped in place. I never bought one, and have never seen the idea since. But at the time I thought it was a pretty smart move.
Maybe another one of our members will remember more about it. Seems like it was decorated as an NKP, if I remember correctly.

Didn't Athearn do the snap-out DB's on some EMD's in HO? and I'm sure Life Like has done the GP7 and (maybe) GP30 with the same.

In N, Life-Like does the GP18 and GP20 with this same feature. Pity no-one else has.

I think most of the manufacturers have done this with some things, but the issue here is:

1: It's only applicable to CNW's original loco's
2: Because of the "flares" it would be somewhat more difficult I reckon to do this to than a standard unit, as the front of the radiator section is sort-of streamlined back to the carbody. (On all the models I've seen with swappable hatches, they use the panel lines that cross the roof and run down the sides a short way to hide the joint, it looks like on the SD45 there is not such an easy join at the rear, making that much more difficult.)

Some of these CNW SD45's were rebuilt after use by CNW, but all the ones I have come across in my research have had dynamics installed after leaving CNW.

I would have thought a high nose version would be much higher on the agenda, as these were used by NW, Southern, NS, Guilford and maybe others...but they haven't looked at that as far as I can tell...

Ref swappable hatches, Kato (GP35), Athearn (GP38-2/40-2/50/60/SD40-2/SD40T-2), Walthers (F40) and Atlas (current GP38/40) plus very likely many more (those mentioned are models I have "played with" myself) have used pop-out dynamic hatches, the P2K Geeps (GP7/9/30) I have -don't- have this, but the two hoods, cab, walkway etc are all separate pieces (more bits than most of the previously mentioned models) so doing the variants (non-dynamic, steam generator, torpedo tube, phase variants etc) have all been done by just changing one or two of those components, sort of a "mix-n-match geep" concept!
