This blog is to give you an insight to the goings on behind the scenes of my Foothill Rails website. Ebay, A Research Tool? Yes.

Posted December 19th, 2007 at 12:28 AM by John Barnhill (Foothills Adventures)

First off, some background. I'm attempting to track the rosters of any Northern California shortline. A very daunting task indeed.

With my limited collection of books and magazines, I rely on a wide variety of sources for my info. Libraries, websites, and contributors. The websites include personal sites, official company sites, preservation sites, museum sites, and discussion groups such as Trainboard. Some of these focus on rosters, some on personal photo collections, others...

All quiet in the hills...

Not much goin on lately but I still wanted to write something here.

Took a quick trip to Woodland recently and was able to photograph two boxcars that still wear YSLR Yolo Shortline markings. Too bad I missed the new 2GS14B that California Northern is testing out and has based at Woodland. From pics I've seen on the net she looks very nifty. # is NREX 2007. I probably won't include her on the roster unless this becomes a long term lease or outright purchase.

Train Village? pt 2...

Posted November 15th, 2007 at 11:50 PM by John Barnhill (Foothills Adventures)

Perserverance pays off!

I had only one contact who even knew just a tad about this live steamer ride in Auburn. Not much he could tell me but one little tidbit has turned the tide on my research.

Rumor, and explicitly rumor, suggested that the same loco may be running on the Folsom Valley Ry near the Zoo in Folsom. It was time to make some phone calls.

After a call or two, I've now been in contact with the current owner of the loco that ran at Train...

A quick Foresthill side trip...

Posted November 8th, 2007 at 07:58 PM by John Barnhill (Foothills Adventures)

Foresthill,CA has a locomotive?! No way!! I won't believe it till I see it! There were no railroads nearby. Why would they have a loco?

Well, while browsing www.steamlocomotive.info, I ran across a reference to an 0-4-0CA in Foresthill. Incredulous! And what is a CA anyhow? Never heard of such a creature in that part of the woods. I have to check it out. Just add it to the list of things to do right?

I had nearly forgotten bout this item till I was playing hookey from...

Train Village?

Another mystery!

The long time residents of Auburn/Bowman CA have always referred to the part of town on I80 between Foresthill exit and Bowman Rd exit as Train Village.

I've never known why until about a couple years ago and have always wanted to add something to my Auburn page of the site.
Only thing is, information is very sketchy and sparse.

I was going to finally post something in the upcoming update but after some more research this morning,...
