Greg Lussier has a great layout that has been published in the trade magazines. In these two threads, he discusses the aspects of building a layout to emulate the real Milwaukee Road. The original threads are in the Fallen Flags Forum>Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific.
Here is the very first thread (http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=60619)where Greg began planning the layout.
This thread covers planning and decisions (http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=79943)about what to include or exclude.
The third (labeled part 2) thread is currently active and discusses the construction of a great bridge (http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=80198) for the layout as well as other models and areas.
As an example, here is a photo of the long bridge. Yes, this is a model!
