Steps to building rocks:
1. Apply plastercloth to newspaper and/or foam scenery.
2. Wet the plastercloth with water.
3. Crumble up the aluminum foil and then flatten it back out.(Pictures #2 and #3)
4. Wet the aluminum foil with water.
5. Mix up plaster of paris until it appears like pancake batter.
6. Pour the plaster of paris on to the aluminum foil and level out with a paint paddle.(Picture #4)
7. Let it set, until it does not run off the aluminum foil and appears a little dull. (DON'T LET IT SET TOO LONG OR IT WILL CRACK.)
8. Re-wet plastercloth and apply the aluminum foil mold onto the scenery.
9. Let set for about 10 mintues or until the aluminum foil will come off clean.
* When making the 2nd rock Repeat steps 1-9. Allow it to overlap the preceding Rock and leave the plaster thin around the edges that will meet with the other rocks and let it set for 10 min, peel off the aluminum foil.
Use a hobby knife or other carving tool (I use a wax carving set) and scrape around the edges where the rocks meet while the new rock is still soft and let set for a few mintues. (If work was still needed to fix the seam I used a carving knife to make indentions.)
Scrub the area where the two rocks meet with a tootbrush to reduce the appearance of the seam. Continue using the toothbrush throughout the project to cause the rocks to blend and appear as one. (re-scrub until you achieve the desired effect).(Picture #5)
11. Let dry until they are white.(several days).
12. Paint the rocks. (I used Woodland Scenes Paints and mixed them according to the Woodland Scenes Scenic Manual.)
13. Dab a first accent color on with a sponge brush sporadically (I used Yellow Ochre as my first color).
14. Dab your main color choice. (I used Burnt Umber as my main color, and applied it heavier).
15. Dab a second accent color in the way you applied the first accent color. (I used Raw Umber).
16. Dab a third accent color. ( I used Stone Gray, I used this color the least).
17. Repeat steps 14-16 to make the color appear darker.
*Any white spots that didn't cover I used my main color (Burnt Umber) with a wet sponge brush, unthinned. (Picture #1)
-I will post more images of the "how-to steps" on my rail images soon
