I decided to finish off an old project I started a few months ago, and repaint a Stewart VO1000 into the Belt Railway of Chicago livery.

I started by doing the modifications and moved the exhausts to the unusual configuration of 2 long stacks on the left. I left off the bell that sits on the front of the hood until after masking and painting to avoid damage.

After painting the hood and cab black, I masked off the areas that will remain black.

Next, I painted everything with light grey spray paint.

Finally, I removed the masking tape to reveal the black again and get some idea of the overall paintscheme.

I mounted the newly-painted shell onto the chassis to check that I'd got the curves right and at the colour separation matched the one and only photo I've seen of this loco - in the Kalmbach diesel book.

I'm quite pleased with the overall appearance after the first attempt. Now to add the lining decals.

Looks very nice, Jon. Do you clear coat before decals? Thanks.

No. I'm far too much of a skinflint to use dullcoat before and after.

Decals are on and the loco is dullcoated. I also fitted the bell and bell housing. Now for the weathering.

I have left the decoder out for now, as I'm using the loco as part of my decoder-fitting clinic at our NMRA bash tomorrow.

Great choice on prototype. Your work looks really nice. Do you plan on weathering it much? Many pics I've seen of BRC units look like a giant ball of filth rolling down the tracks. LOL
