To quote many other participants, "I can tell by the shadows that this lies in the southern hemisphere, taken near sunset" etc, etc,. Charlie, these are all fascinating. Every time I open a new one it has already been solved. Good stuff. It's amazing to me that such vast yards still exist. I thought they all went out with the demise of steam, but then you know I'm prejudiced that way. :tb-biggrin: Congratulations, Scott!

Well, let me see:

It's on planet earth.

It's sunny out.

There are tracks.

There are trees.

I think it's either in the northern or southern hemispheres, but not in Antarctica or out in the middle of the ocean somewhere.

This one is tricky!

I don't see the compass in the upper right so I'm incline to believe that this is just a blurry picture of someones N-track module.

Charlie, this wouldn't be one of the seldom used lines up in your neighborhood, would it? The high sand content around the roadbed, shape of the scrub, color and texture of the field grass, and dead oak(?) leaves at far right are reminiscent of northern NH and ME, and southern NB in late fall.

This is obviously the old Lone Wolf (http://www.city-data.com/city/Lone-Wolf-Oklahoma.html), Lugert (http://ortho.ftw.nrcs.usda.gov/osd/dat/L/LUGERT.html) and Luling (http://www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Luling/luling.htm) Line behind Flores Country Store (http://www.liveatfloores.com/main.htm) near Dime Box, Texas. (http://www.texasescapes.com/CentralTexasTownsSouth/DimeBoxTexas/DimeBoxTx.htm) Back in 1955 we listened to Willie Nelson play there on Friday afternoon after work and watch the trains go by as we sometimes did the Texas two-step. At least it looks like those tracks late on Friday around sundown. Is that close?

There's got to be a riddle to this, right? It's Scott's hometown, or a spot on his layout, or a place he likes to railfan...or else a reference to a previous Google Earth contest that he won...or something like that.

How can you tell the shadows are wrong without a compass rose? The shadows show the sun angle, angles which can be produced at different times of day at different times of year.

If you look at the bark on the tree trunks you can determine that the photo is oriented with the tracks running on an east/west axis with north to the top of the photo. The early Fall season can be determined by the turning of color of the leaves on the tree to the right. It is about noon so the shadows indicating the Latitude to be somewhere between 60º and 70º North. The length of the fuzz on the woolly worm caterpillars indicate that the coming winter will be mild.

Don't forget the iron oxide residue in the soil at the lower left, which I analyzed and found to match Jimmy Hoffa's DNA, and therefore this is next to a

SOYBEAN FIELD IN WISCONSIN!

Russell, Check this out...

Over the Rainbow
Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.

Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow,
Why oh why can't I?
:tb-wink:

I think the scare crow was singing this song?

Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for all the joy and pain.
Picture shows, second balcony, was the place we'd meet, second seat, go Dutch treat, you were sweet.

Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for walks down lovers lane.
I can see, hearts carved on a tree, letters inter-twined, for all time, yours and mine, that was fine.

Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for funny cards from Spain.
I recall, Central Park in fall, how you tore your dress, what a mess, I confess, that's not all.

Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for seeing me again.
Though we go, on our seperate ways, still the memory stays, for always, my heart says, Danke Schoen.

Danke Schoen, Auf Wiedersehn, Danke Schoen.
