More News
Programs released in the last 6-9 months continue to do well. These
include Southern Pacific Vintage Steam, SP 4449-The Daylight, New Haven Mainlines,
and Great Steam Trains Combo. One of our most popular programs of all time,
DM&IR Yellowstones Giants of Steam, continues to be popular, perhaps because these
massive engines had more tractive effort(power), than the famous Union Pacific Big Boy.
Both were impressive machines. On that same note, another program of ours thats
sort of a "Sleeper" to most fans is "Garratts of Zimbabwe" These articulated
engines were
not ever used in North America but were highly successful in places like Spain,
Australia
and Africa. They are definately unique locomotives, and my brother Randy shot this
program
in 1990 when steam was still very much in every day operations in Zimbabwe(formerly
Rhodesia).
You can check it out here.

Well I think we have said enough for this time around. We did not do an emailing in
June, so
I wanted to make up for it in July. Please take advantage of the special DVD sale,
and the VHS
specials. We do not normally like to run specials or sales, since we feel these
train programs
in general are already very reasonably priced. Think about how much a motel costs
for one night
to go shoot something today, and these all look dirt cheap by comparison.

Cheers from southwestern ohio.

September Newsletter from Greg Scholl Video Productions

Wow, still pretty hot here in Southern Ohio, and dry too. While Northern Ohio was
having flooding,
we were parched. Only good news is the golf balls bounce a lot and go further down
the fairway,
which sure helps my game!!

We don't have anything much to report this month, except to let you know there is
less than
a month remaining on the Christmas in The Summer special. Several folks have missed
seeing this
on the home page of the web site, since there is no image. Therefore here is the
direct link to it.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/combospecials.html

This special allows you to choose multiples of 2, 3, 4, or all 5 items, for the best
savings. This
limited sale ends at Midnight September 30th.

We are beginning work on our new catalog/price list for 2008, which is normally
mailed in November.
There will not be much VHS titles listed, as we are not restocking those that sell
out. We do have
a lot of titles left, but in the future, the only way to access this information in
the future is to
check the web site, where we will keep the items current, and if we have that
particular title in
VHS you will be able to select it in the "Select Format" part of the description,
which will then
put that format into the shopping cart for you.

There are still around 35 or more titles that we have produced that are not yet
converted to DVD. We
are contemplating retiring some titles completely, and right now these are only
available in VHS.
Thus, if you see some titles not listed in DVD, and you really want that title, you
might want to grab
it instead of missing out on it entirely. We are keeping a current listing of VHS
titles, and how
many remain, so that we can delete titles as they sell out.

We will be offering our first new title of the season later this month. It will be
advertised in the
November issue of Railfan and Railroad Magazine, which releases about the end of
September or early
October, so we will have it on the website, and issue another newsletter when we do
upload it to the
web site.

More new titles. We have other new titles in the works, and they will release in
October or November
as well. Besides some new titles, we will offer 3 more titles that have been
converted to DVD from
existing titles. They will likely be uploaded to the web site in October.

2007 has already been a great year for us here at Greg Scholl Video Productions.
Because things have
gone so well, we will actually be holding back two new titles to release in 2008.
Hey, no sense
losing all our profits to the government, eh!!!

So, no big sales pitch this month. Just browse through the site, and enjoy checking
things out, and
if you want to order something, I am sure you will enjoy the action. Soon the
weather will be
turning cooler, and I will be complaining how cold it is. Knowing that, I am not
complaining all
that much about the hot weather now!!!! Where ever you are we hope you enjoy the
video weather we
might bring your way in the future. Cheers!

Sincerely,
Greg Scholl

Newsletter from Greg Scholl

Its late September and things are happening. Summer is ending(although its still
hot here), and fall
is right around the corner. What a difference 100-150 miles makes in weather. In
southern Ohio its
hot, with drought conditions and smog alerts. Saturday and Sunday we were shooting
trains in northwestern
Ohio and it was clear blue sky, nice temperatures, and everything was green.

We have a new release to showcase today, which is our first contemporary steam video
since 2003.
"Pere Marquette 1225 Freight Special" was shot in April of 2007 in Michigan. This
big Lima-Built
2-8-4 is similar to the many other Berkshire type locomotives built in the early
1940's for various
railroads. Many of you are familiar with the 2-8-4's of not only the Pere
Marquette, but also the
ones on the Nickel Plate Road(like 765 and others), and the Chesapeake & Ohio
Railroad, with engines
like 2716 and others. This was a rare opportunity to get this 2-8-4 on a photo
special where we
could see a good show of steam action. My brother Randy was also there, and we
supplement our video
shots with some of his for more coverage, and continual sequences in some locations.
Also we
have made the chapter menu so you can go to portions you want to see again easily.
We have
Friday preparations, plus Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon segments. If
you click
through the 1225 description for more details, you can also see a link for 6 of
Randy's still
images we have added as well. For the full description go to this link.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/steam-dvds.html

There are only a few more days remaining on our "Christmas in Summer Sale" which
ends September 30th.
For those who have not taken advantage of it, you can click the link, and it will
take you to a
complete description, and special order form. Basically by ordering 2 to 5 of these
in whatever
combo you wish, you save a great deal of cash!!! Here is the link.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/combospecials.html

Normally, we include our newsletter/catalog with each order, but we are running out
of them. Since
most of you ordering are seeing it on the internet, we may not be able to include
print information
with your order. Frankly, you can see way more on the internet than we can ever
mail you anyway! And,
the images on the web site are in color!! We are going to be sending a new
newsletter for 2008 in
November like we always do, to announce new programs and changes.

We are slowly selling down VHS stock. On some titles we still do not have DVD
converted yet, but
if we run out of that title in VHS we may actually eliminate the title altogether.
Therefore we
suggest that you may want to pick-up a title of interest, even though you may really
want DVD. We
are considering dropping some titles entirely, rather than spend the time, and
resources to convert
them to dvd. If you have a question about a certain title being converted to dvd in
the future, drop
us a note.

As usual we invite you to check out all our programs on the web site. There is tons
of enjoyment and
viewing for your entertainment dollar.

Checking in with New Programs for the Fall and Holiday season.

Well, its mid-October and time to roll-out new DVD's for the fall season. It is our
normal procedure
to release new products this time of year. Our December ads will be off the presses
in a couple of weeks,
so we wanted to get everything on the web site, and let our web customers know right
away.
There are 6 new items for 2007 and they are the top six items pictured on the
home page of
http://www.gregschollvideo.com (http://www.gregschollvideo.com/)
You can easily click on any item, and you will be sent to the more detailed
information on that
title. Please remember to hit the back button, or HOME, to get back to the other
categories if you
wish to check a different title, or look around the other selections.
We are quite pleased to release 3 titles that we have converted to DVD, and 3 new
programs. The
titles that are recently converted are SOUTHERN PACIFIC PICTORIAL, SANTA FE
PICTORIAL, and PLOW EXTRAS.
Be sure to check out the SP and Santa Fe Pictorials since each of them has had new
material added
which makes these a nice value, as the price has remained the same as the VHS was at
$29.95. Also note
that we offer a special package deal for both where you save nearly $10.00....both
for $49.95. You
can read more about them here.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/dvd.html

The new titles include "Pere Marquette 1225 Freight Special" which was shot in
April of 2007. This
is the first new contemporary steam video we have released in nearly 4 years. We
did an emailing for
this a few weeks ago, so I won't elaborate much on this except to say that many
customers have been
delighted with their purchase. You can see more info plus some extra photos here.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/steam-dvds.html

Another new program is OHIO RAIL DIAMONDS, a contemporary video shot at several
Ohio diamonds in
the northeastern part of the state. The concept was to do all this in one day,
which we did, but we
also included more material shot at two of the locations, including one segment that
was shot 15 years
prior and it features vintage power from that 1991 videography. This program was
shot mostly in
wide-screen format, which is the first of that type for us to offer. The earlier
material however is
not shot in wide-screen but will play fine. All this has natural train sounds, as
well as limited
narration for your enjoyment. More information here.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/dvd.html

The last new program is LAST STREAMLINERS THROUGH THE ROCKIES, which is a unique
video that really
falls into the vintage category. It centers around 2 Everett Rohrer films we
obtained including one
on the California Zephyr from Denver through the Rockies, and another film where
they ride the last
run of the "ROYAL GORGE" passenger train from Denver to Salida and back. In
addition we have some
sound footage we shot while chasing the Zephyr in 1981, and some scenes of Amtrak
along the same route
in 1994. For more info go to..
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/dvd.html

I purposely did not mention PLOW EXTRAS until now. While I gave a mention to all
the titles
above, I am going to highlight one of these new titles periodically from now until
about December
15th, leading up to the holidays. This first segment will be on Plow Extras, and we
will discuss
some things that do not appear in the actual video descriptions on the web site.
This video shot and
released in 1988, is nearly 20 years old. It was one of the best all-time selling
videos for GSVP,
and for some unknown reason we never got around to converting it to DVD. Now it is
done, and we have
changed nothing except to put in an extra 10 seconds or so of the plow wreck in slow
motion. We did
put in nice chapter menus, like we have in all our DVD's so you can select a segment
if you want to
jump around.

I wanted to mention this video first, since it is a special program. This was a
unique time, and
our second plow video of this type. In 1987 we made Snow Plow With CN F7's. It was
so successful,
that I wanted to go back and try to get more, which we accomplished adding in
different routes, and
some CPR action in addition to the CN plows. This time, Kathi could not go along as
our daughter
Heather was still a toddler at 4 plus months at the time. As in 1987 Canadian
expert Greg McDonald
helped me on days he had free to go along, and even when he wasn't around kept me
advised of movements
the next day when he found out what was going on. There were a couple of incidents
on this trip that
were interesting. The CN called a plow to run to Douglas Point, via Port Elgin out
of Stratford and
I had to chase that one alone. Not knowing the roads well was a problem, and
somehow I managed to
do okay. It was a mild day, and the snow was really wet and sticky, so the southern
part of the run
was heavy slushy snow. Further north the snow was more powder, and it was nearly
dark when the plow
extra got near its destination. I then started the long drive back to the motel in
Stratford, and
a snow storm kicked up which was no fun to drive in at night. I was sure glad to
hit my head on the
pillow that night.

Another interesting tidbit about this trip was on Sunday morning when I spotted a
snowplow operation
I had not expected to see. I was figuring on a day to relax and headed to the
Stratford depot to see what
might be happening, when I noted a pair of CN F-units pushing a plow by the depot,
and heading west
toward Goderich. So, I hustled out of town to set-up for a shot, and found it was
not the usual orange
CN plow I was used to seeing in Stratford, but a bigger black plow. I later found
out it was the
crew and plow from London, that had run to Stratford, turned on the wye and plowed
to Goderich. This
black plow sported a Teflon paint, that in theory was to aid in helping the snow
slide off the plow, sort
of like a non-stick frying pan would do!!! Greg McDonald was thrilled when I told
him I had shot this
plow in action, and told me it had a weird way of throwing the snow, making it
appear to be a geyser
sometimes in the middle of the plow. After looking at the footage, we found that
indeed that appeared
in one or two scenes, and its mentioned in the video.

The first plow we shot of the trip was a CN plow to Goderich. Greg McDonald is
seen talking to one
of the crew at the depot after the run, and they were discussing a film that was
made of a plow wreck
in 1971. The head of the CN maintenance of way department in Stratford, Murray
Atwell had the film
which showed this wreck. Well, Murray had been in the wrecked plow, and I got him
to do an on-camera
piece as he described the situation. This was before I had seen the film, but I
figured it would be
nice to have this over a silent piece of film. Later, it was determined the film
Murray had was a
copy of the 8mm film, and we found out the owner which Greg contacted so we could
obtain the use of
the original to make a transfer to video. This film turned out to be pretty
amazing, and had been
shown on the London, Ontario TV after the incident occurred in 1971. So, here in
1988, we had the
film and the guy who was in it giving his account of the situation. Its really some
of the rarest
train film you will ever see!!! As luck would have it, Greg McDonald called my
motel the night before
I was to leave and told me the CN had decided to plow the St. Mary's Sub, which
would take the plow
extra through Granton, where the wreck had occurred. He said...."It's on your way
home". So I got two
shots of this train and ended the video with a shot taken at or near the spot where
the plow had
wrecked in 1971. Of course it was not as dramatic, but was an appropriate way to
end the show. This
line was soon history, and speaking of that, all the lines shown in this video are
now completely
gone except the CN line to Goderich, which is now owned by the Goderich & Exeter
Railroad.

I hope you have enjoyed some of these special insights about the title "Plow
Extras". We have a
slightly redesigned cover for the DVD, and feel that this video is a must for anyone
who likes
trains, and even those that are not "hardcore fans" will enjoy this unique show. We
have 4
different Snow Plow videos, two from Canada, and two Rotary snow plow videos. All
are interesting
and unique. You can't go wrong with this one, or the others for that matter.
For more info on the video go here.
http://www.gregschollvideo.com/snowplow-dvds.html

All the new items are in stock, so load-up on great railroading entertainment.
Remember you can't
stay in a motel and shoot your own videos for $29.95, so these are all priced
reasonably by comparison!!

Sincerely,

Greg Scholl
