A crew copied clearance card. Sloppy. The reason lineside operators were needed. There is a carbon backed mini-19 attached. But in such a way, I cannot scan without damaging this set.

Ken, nice history there when things were better than they are now. Is that order about 13 cars on the siding just intended for information to the crews? I don't recall seeing any like that before.

Jim-

That content was common to most all US railroads. Indeed, informational for crews. So they could plan their moves ahead of time. Meets, switching, or?

How many of these flimsies do you have in your collection? Some of the names of places are great, Bad Axe among them. I assume they are the names of RR CP's and probably can't be found on road maps. :confused2:

BoxcabE50

Jim-

Bad Axe is an actual town.

Sometimes the station name, is different from the town. Sometimes it's because the town later grew up around a station. Sometimes the RR changed their station name, to match that town. Other times, they did not. Larger towns might even have more than one station. It makes for an interesting bit of research!

I have 182 different stations from the C&O. About 13,000 offices, from 580-590 companies around the world. It's required decades of digging to reach this point!

OK. I was wondering if this was moving a dead steamer to scrap. Apparently not. I am not certain how late steam lingered on the C&O? Or how long they might have kept some as a reserve? Some companies, that had dieselized by the early 1950's, still had steam as standby power until the late 1950's.

Dieselization on the C&O was officially completed on Sept. 28, 1956.
The Pere Marquette District was officially dieselized in 1952. The last active steam locomotive on the PM was taken out of service on Dec. 31, 1951.

I'm stumped on the exact location of Cowan - I thought it was in southwest Virginia, somewhere near Pulaski in Pulaski County. Craigsville is up north farther in Augusta County - it's on the map.

Cowan Virginia - It's between Belspring and Radford VA. You take State Road 11 north out of Radford to Fairlawn - go right on 114 (Peppers Ferry Blvd.) - then turn left (north) on Belspring Road - takes you to Cowan.
I got this info with help from a nice lady who works for the town of Pulaski!

So is Cowan actually a civilian settlement? Or a railroad location, which happened to be placed away from most other places?

My guess is that Cowan VA is a railroad designated name - maybe at one time there was a tower or office there.

Order 544 June 23, 1971 - Engine 7531 - a brand new SD-40, built 02/03/1971 (unless it was old 7531, an F7B...but I don't think so)

Order 43 Oct. 6, 1951 - Engines 105 and 106 - C&O (Pere Marquette) E7As

Order 26 Dec. 20, 1962 - Engine 4030 (I think that's what it is) - E8A

Order 106 Aug. 8, 1970 - Engine 6052 - GP9

This is really great fun to research!

I know a little about Dante - I forgot to answer that question! Dante is way down in the soutwest part of Virginia along side Lick Creek. It's in Russell County, and was on the Clinchfield Railroad down in the coal fields and "hollers" near Sandy Ridge Mountain. There was a Dante Yard, which had a 300-ton coaling and sanding tower, which is a great subject to model because it was small, and pretty typical of the era. There was also a wooden water tank, 120 foot turntable, ash pits, a machine shop, scale house and tracks, etc.
I am actually using the Dante Yard plan as a basis for a small yard and engine facility on my N layout - it's in the final planning stage now. I will probably even work the Union Baptist Church in the plan.
So here is another twist in my layout which was originally supposed to be C&O - then I decided to make it more generic so that I could turn it B&O if I want - and now, the Clinchfield twist!
:omg::teeth:

BoxcabE50
May 14th, 2007, 10:28 PM
Hmmm. Sounds like it was possible there were two seperate train order offices of Dante, and Dante Yard. Were both the Clinchfield, and the C&O there at the same time? If so, that might explain....?

BTW-

I do have some Clinchfield flimsies...

:D

Dante is the town at the Dante Yard - I'm guessing that C&O had leased some rights to run on the Clinchfield. I thought that the C&O interchanged with the Clinchfield at Elkhorn City, Kentucky - I don't remember the C&O being near Dante VA. The Clinchfield became part of the Family Lines, and Family Lines merged into the Seaboard System. In 1986 Seaboard and Chessie merged and became CSX.
So still sort of a mystery with that C&O train order talking about trains going north through Dante...

Edit: Post some of those Clinchfield flimsies - you can probably tell I'm a Clinchfield fan, too!

Order 345 May 22, 1962 (my birthday is May 22) engine 5574 - RSD-5
Order 7 Aug. 20, 1970 - engine 6088 - GP9 at Fremont MI - the Fremont Subdivision runs through my backyard!
Order 106 Oct. (?) 21, 1972 - 3527 - GP35, & 6088 - GP9 at Fuller, Grand Rapids - believe these would have been heading up north - most traffic was east-west. This line used to go up to Baldwin, Ludington where the car ferry to Wisconsin was, and up to Petoskey.
The Fremont Sub goes from Holland north to Muskegon, and up to Fremont to service the Gerber Baby Food plant and the paper mills.

Better than nothing. But it's a late computer printer version. These were used by many companies. The dispatcher actually sends these. The operator would tear it off, and hand them out. If no operator, then the train crew themselves picked them up at the printer. Gladstone (Bent Creek), Virginia:

Oh! Oh! I Know!!!The original Pere Marquette RR had two routes into Canada. The main route went from Detroit into Ontario. The other route went from Port Huron MI over into Sarnia, Ontario. PM had acquired the Lake Erie & Detroit River Railway in 1903, and PM had trackage rights on the Canada Southern and the Michigan Central to run from St. Thomas, Ontario to Niagara Falls N.Y.
PM also had leased track rights from the New York Central to run to Buffalo, N.Y.

Interesting how these systems came together. Should have been a good through route back then. Seems like that would still hold up today.

Okay, so you're looking for the location of "Lundale #2" coal mine? Looks like it was in Lundale.

"In 1972 Amherst No. 5 mine and, Lundale No. 1 and No. 2 mines, all three of Amherst Coal Company (Lundale), was located at Lundale. Amherst No. 5 employed 18 persons and produced 50,000 tons annually. Lundale No. 1 mine employed 163 persons and produced 360,000 tons, and No. 2 mine employed 129 persons and 263,000 tons annually."

Order 115 Feb. 21 1966 - Marlette is in the middle of the "thumb" area here in Michigan. This was on the old Pere Marquette line that ran north from Port Huron to Saginaw.

Order ? Nov. 25 1985 - Meadow Creek WV - this line was 50/50 C&O and NYC and was originally the Nicholas, Fayette & Greenbrier RR. This is (was) part of the Greenbrier Coalfield - near East Rainelle. There was a Meadow River Smokeless Coal Company there. Rainelle was the location of JD Cabin - which was painted Conrail blue back in the 1980s...
Engine 4067 was a GP40 - engine 3844 was a B&O GP38. Both engines were probably in Chessie System paint at this time.

Order 15 Dec. 24 1969 - Merlin Ontario Canada - this was ex-Pere Marquette territory. Engine 5963 was a GP9.

Order 14 June 23, 1970 - engine 3582 C&O GP35 (5 years old at this point).
Order 19 Dec. 6, 1967 - 4021 C&O E8A (or was this a B&O engine?).
Order 16 Sept. 6, 1973 - Monroe Michigan is about half way between Toledo Ohio and Detroit - it's famous for Monroe Shock Absorbers.
Order 24 Sept. 10, 1968 - 6159 GP9
Order 119 Oct. 15 1965 - Newaygo is a small town about half way between Muskegon and Fremont - this division is called the Fremont Subdivision, and starts in Holland and goes north through Muskegon. The freight that used to be run daily through my back yard was called The Cannonball. Here's a picture of the old Pere Marquette bridge over the Muskegon River at Newaygo:

Clearance Form A Dec. 12, 1976 - New Buffalo is almost at the Indiana state line.
Order 3 Jan. 18th 1956 - North Yard Muskegon - 5063 was an NW2; 1841 was one of my favorites, a BL2. Here's a picture of 1841 switching the car ferries at Ludington in August 1950:

I just love this thread! I've been to most of the places that are mentioned in the flimsies.
Order 33 Aug. 25, 1957 - Plaster Creek. This is Grand Rapids Michigan, technically Wyoming. Plaster Creek is the location of the East Tower, which is the main operation point on the west side of the state.
Order 21 May 31, 1976 - Pleasant St. Grand Rapids. The tower here used to direct traffic north on the Baldwin Subdivision, but was shut down and all operations were taken over by the tower at Plaster Creek. Engine number 3014 was a GP-30 built in January of 1963. Lake Odessa is east of Grand Rapids, and had a really neat little depot that CSX actually donated - it has been moved and restored.
Order 1 May 6, 1967 - Plymouth - this was the junction point of the Toledo and the Detroit Subdivisions. Passenger train traffic was directed from here north/south and east/west. Rougemere is a famous yard - especially if you are a fan of the photos and movies of the late Emery Gulash. Some of these movies are available from Pentrex in the B&O Odyssey series.
Order 116 Oct. 30, 1978 - #5917 was a GP9 built in Dec. 1954.
Order 150 Mar. 13, 1970 - Prince West Virginia - one of my favorite stations. The first of what was supposed to be a complete new look for the C&O - Art Deco styled stations, coal towers, etc. to appear with the new Chessie streamliners and the future "Train X". Of course financial difficulties brought an end to the Chessie, and Train X never got out of the dream stage. This also struck a blow to the career of Robert Young, who spearheaded these developments in passenger trains during the 1950's.

This was taken in August, 2001:

Tim-

Can you fill me in a bit more, on the Grand Rapids- Wyoming scene, regarding Plaster Creek? Is Wyoming a suburb of GR?

Wasn't there some equipment painted up in Train X? Or am I thinking of another railroad? I know a bunch of companies did modern brick depots during the early to mid-1950's. A last gasp by those who still felt positive about passenger travel.

Grand Rapids has three suburbs that the C&O (CSX) runs through; Kentwood, Wyoming, and Grandville. Heading west from Lake Odessa, the track crosses the Thornapple River at Whitneyville. Then the track continues west through Kentwood, fairly close to where I work by the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. The track goes over Patterson Avenue, over a really nice bridge with the Chessie kitten on it. The track then heads northwest into Grand Rapids, then due north and then west under U.S. 131, and then southwest into Wyoming, and the Wyoming Yard. Right before the Wyoming Yard is the split where the tracks head north by Pleasant Street, where the brick Pleaseant Street Tower used to be. This tower used to control the crossing with the PRR (later ConRail) crossing and the entrance to Grand Rapids Union Station where the great Pere Marquette streamliners would run to Chicago. All are now gone. The tracks also head north out of Grand Rapids on the Baldwin Subdivision from here.
Plaster Creek Tower used to control the east approach to Wyoming Yard, and after closing of the Pleasant Street Tower, took over control of all local operations. The west end of Wyoming Yard is called Lamar. Heading out of Lamar, the tracks continue west into Grandville, and then to Hudsonville, Zeeland, and into Holland where I live.

The locomotive for Train X never made it farther than the artist conception drawings. There was a two car consist cooked up between the C&O Research Department and Pullman Standard for testing, but that's as far as it went. There was a contest panned with a $1,000 prize to name the train, but of course it never came to be. The artist concept drawing of the train showed an engine somewhat similar to the GM Aerotrain, and the cars were designed to be articulated and share trucks. Robert Young had some pretty advanced thinking, and a lot of the design concepts for this train are a reality on some of today's more advanced trains such as the Acela.

So is Wyoming an incorporated community? Or would it have been, at the time of that 1957 flimsy? If so, I will need to change my files to reflect this fact. Trying to keep my records as accurate as possible, indicatng the nearest town of each station.

Wyoming is fairly big - it's got a population of around 70,000, so it is a city. Wyoming was incorporated as a township in 1848, and became incorporated as a city in 1959. I work with the husband of the Mayor of Wyoming, Carol Sheets - she's a very nice person.

How many? C&O locations, about 180. In my entire collection, representation approaching 13,000 locations, from about 590 companies, and probably 20 countries. I've at least a blank form, if not a single copied order, or clearance card, or even a set. This has been gathered via decades of searching...

Plus boxes of extras totalling at least many, many hundreds of thousands.... During the past ten years, I've auctioned off quite a few from my excess. Amounting to many boxes worth. Probably somewhere between 100K and 200K.

Will start in on the "R" offices next.

Order 102 Jan. 19, 1970 - Beckley, West Virginia was the nearest "big" town by Prince, where the station is (and is still used as the Amtrak station for the Beckley area). There used to be a tower at Prince - NI Cabin.
Order 27 Nov. 19, 1947 - Reed City - this would have been the last days of Pere Marquette District steam power (PM "merged" into the C&O on June 6, 1947). Engine 720 was an ALCO 4-6-2. Number 52 was an NW2 diesel. Number 1050 was an ALCO 2-8-2. Hersey is east of Reed City on the line that went between Saginaw and Ludington.
Order 17 Oct. 5, 1955 - Engine 81 was a BL2.

OK. Here is what I was leading up to tonight. This order. It holds some good memories for me. No. I was never there. But when I see the dispatchers initials, the years run in reverse.

"EAW" was Edward A. Wright. "Ted" was a Canadian National Railways dispatcher. He lived in the city named on this flimsy. I never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face. But we corresponded for some years. A good old fashioned nice guy. Up beat. Always very helpful answering my questions. This example was one he gave to me. So this paper will always be special. I know what you mean. For years and years I would hear the dispatchers from Jacksonville, Florida over the scanner. Got to know their personalities, actually. One dispatcher in particular would ride along on some of the runs over the division up here, and he knew his area well. He even would go out to RailImages (the old one) and check out the picks I posted there. Miss hearing him out there!

BTW- Been meaning to ask- You've noted BL2 engines a couple of times. How many did they have? Where they ever repainted? Am trying to recall any picture I've seen. Was the "as delivered" scheme with some blue and yellow, "C&O" and RR name scripted out along the side?

:D

Boxcab E50

Tim Loutzenhiser
June 14th, 2007, 03:12 AM
The Pere Marquette had originally ordered 6 BL2s, but C&O took control before delivery so they were dark blue (Enchantment Blue) with yellow (Venetian Yellow) "fenders", with imitation stainless paint on the bottom half of the fenders. These were numbers 80 through 85, and lettered with Chesapeake and Ohio in script. C&O actually ordered 8 more after that.
Later on in life some were repainted in what they call the Huntington paint scheme, which was blue with silver-gray along the bottom half of the fenders.

This one twisted me up a little - I had to search through other predecessor railroads - some that I'm not that familiar with. Then I re-read the order and figured out that since the purpose of the order was a correction to the engine number, it was just a goof! Just goes to show that none of us can ever be perfect!

Sometimes the dispatcher goofs. Other times, they are supplied with incorrect information. In this instance, there should not have been a major problem. As any train meeting the mis-identified engine, should have held their position. And contacted their dspr.

Of course, in those days, you also had more eyes watching for such troubles. Those lineside operators. And additional crew members. Also, someone who'd been in service a few years, might have recognized an unfamiliar engine number, and questioned it.

Are we gonna make it to 300?

Well...... I have about two dozen more scans to upload. After that, it's up to any resulting conversation. So, join in on the fun.

I believe the Ann Arbor Railroad also ran in this town? Did the AA, and C&O cross?

My wife is from the town of Durand. Lots of Railroad history as well as still a big train town. Thanks for the link.

It's kind of embarrassing, but I have not been over to the Durand area to catch the Pere Marquette Berk 1225 running...
I need to get on that!
