The first time I heard about that engine I was speechless. You can do a google on C&O 4617 and find several pictures and articles. I am tempted to paint my C&O sd 40 in that color scheeme.

I am tempted to paint my C&O sd 40-2 in that color scheeme. CSX 4617 is a pre-Dash-2 SD40. Flexicoil trucks, no sight glass.

That unit has been in around and through Huntington so many times in the last 4 or 5 years I am surprised CSX hasn't put it through the paint shop. This unit wasnt even fitted with ditch lights until about a year ago. I believe there is less than a dozen..maybe even less than a half-dozen SD40's left on CSX...and most of the ones remaining are probably in storage somewhere.

It was just a test to see if you were really watching. My post actually said sd40. OK, I went back and corredcted it.

This will interest you fellow C&O fans that according to a postng on another website, CSX is planning to retire it's last SD-40's on the system before too long. Therefore, a petition drive has started to let CSX know that 4617 should be kept to donate to a museum, C&OHS or wherever to preserve not only this being a former C&O unit, but the fact that it's a SD-40. Get on railfan.net, look up indiana.railfan.net, get on the bull session page, scroll down to News, get on page 2 of that section to read the gentleman's posting. After he makes his statement, he shows how you can get on a petition website in order to post your support for this loco's preservation!!!! berkmeister

Saving an SD-40!!! This sounds like a great effort - but knowing the way CSX tends to handle public relations and the corporate attitude towards preservation (it's like a "scorched earth" policy), I don't hold much hope for this effort. But I'm glad to try to help make it happen - if we can!
