Colonel I must be dumb this morning, but I am not understanding what type of pictures you are looking for in this contest. I will be traveling this weekend, and plan on taking my camera, so I just might have a few chances of taking some railroad pictures.

Colonel

Well yes the subject is obscured but could be anything to do with time, clocks a year basically anything

8. Ensure dates and times on your camera are correct.

What does "date and time" have to do with camera? I know some of these newfangled digital camera record a time stamp on picture, but I consider that as ruining the image, except for forensic or scientific use. Are your contests open to pictures taken the old fashioned way-- shot on film, taken to photofinisher, pick up a week later, scan into computer, Photoshop to crop, color-correct etc, compress to jpg and upload to Railimages.

Does the contest disqualify a time image that took years to create, such as a before and after "dream" double-exposure?

E-8
April 19th, 2007, 02:21 PM
Kenneth,

The timestamp does not have to be visible on the photo. The EXIF information that is part of the photo is still able to be obtained even if the timestamp is not visible.

For a photo to be considered for this contest, that information must be available to prove that the photo was taken during the 72 hour period of the contest.

A photo such as one you describe would not be possible as that is not the intent of these contests.

So what your saying is like timetables correct?

Doug A.
April 19th, 2007, 08:06 PM
Guys,

Don't take this the wrong way, but part of a contest like this is taking the subject given and apply your own interpretation to it. As was said, there is no wrong answer. Get creative!

In my opinion if you have to ask, then you're shortchanging yourself as well as the other participants that come up with their own unique ideas. For me, I have yet to come up with a game plan for this one, but I'm sure I will. And I'm sure you guys will too.

So this means Midnight on Friday the 20th? Now let me see, 72 hours would be 24 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Duh!!http://www.trainboard.com/tbsmiles/057.gif

It's snowed, hailed, and sleeted, along with rain off and on the last couple days.. (and 3 of those in 1 hour!) Ah, Spring in Montana! Good thing this one can be done indoors! :)

Colonel

I will accept images taken from the 20th to the 23rd which makes it more that 72 hours.

The challenge is all about encouraging people to go and take photos rather than use existing photos. However if anybody is prepared to run a challenge that uses photos already taken then i have no objection.

i hope everybody is enjoying these challenges and getting out and taking photos. It is already the 20th of april here i have just taken my photo i weill post tonight.

So let me get this straight - we have 72 hours to take AND post the photos? I'll be spending time (hopefully) at the Cajon Pass this weekend, but I don't know if there will be facilities to upload any pictures before Monday. :(

Oh well, never mind, time stands still anyway at Tehachapi and Cajon! :D :D

Thankfully, yesterday was payday, so I've got gas money available.
Had best not drive too much though with gas quickly approaching the

No large station tower clocks in this part of Georgia, I'm afraid.

The clock on top of the dome for the Fort Bend County Court House said 3:15. I had already waited over an hour for a train, but alas, the scanner was quiet and the rails were silent. About 45 minutes later I passed a BNSF train heading this way on the UP but I was miles away by then. Oh well.http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/601/IMG_1167.JPG

A Challenge Within a Challenge

Can you find the time to locate the clock?
Also for folks in the North East why isn't it: "Time to make the donuts"< delete clue >
http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/1490/WhatTimeIsIt.jpg
There is a clock in this picture. Here is the 1280 wide picture:
http://windingstream.com/rr/cc.jpg

The picture was taken in Cleveland Circle, Boston / Brookline. It is the last stop on Beacon Street. I didn't know about the contest until I saw Flashman's post in the Nscale forum. I decided to find out what the contest was since I live near trains and maybe could go out and get something. I almost gave up when I saw the theme since there are no clocks in the area. Then I remembered I snapped this shot. Over all not a great picture but the time is ironic and poignant on a personal level. Thanks to the contest this image will be very valuable to me.

I lived here for about 4 years. Rrrr and I visited Saturday night to chase away an old ghost that has haunted me for some time.

I posted this last night, but perhaps the little elves moving all those electrons around dropped this load in an alleyway somewhere! :D

Dinner Time at Devore

Some may argue, but they are few. There's no railfan eatery that holds a candle to Joe's Country Corner at Devore in Southern California. What makes it so special is it sits right on the only spot where the three tracks running up (or down) Cajon Pass converge. So, you can sit (outside of course, this is California) and see the BNSF Transcons come roaring by, as well as miscellaneous UP trains, some on the Palmdale Cutoff and some on the BNSF tracks. All but a few feet away.

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/Dinner_time.jpg

So... catch a sundowner and a burger as Uncle Pete and Warren Buffett's finest provide the entertainment. Is that the greatest time for a railfan, or what? :D

Colonel,
I really enjoy these contests. Didn't get an entry in this week cause I wasnt feeling well on Monday. Had a shot of the Kelso, WA Amtrak depot. Anyway. I was wondering if it would be difficult to add a link to each of the entrys in the poll section? It definately isn't neccesary, but might be helpful when voting. Again, these are always fun contests to partake in and just watch and vote.

Way to go Keith! This was fun! We were heading out of town the day I took my shot - I just barely got the camera out of the bag and turned on - let alone have time to set up a shot. My original plan was just to get a picture of the clock with the Holland depot in the background - thanks to CP running that extra, it added a little action!

I enjoyed all of the photos.
I voted for: "Times Up". It conveyed so much to me with the title.

Maybe the next contest should be to list suggestions for what the next contest should be. Needless to say folks will suggest what they have a good chance of doing. That's ok since this is a friendly thing. If there was something at stake that would be different. So here's my idea:
Everyone list what there ideas for a contest. After 72 hours Paul compiles a Pole based on them and then we all vote for our preferance. Bonus: Paul is not compelled to take the "winning" option.

J Starbuck
May 3rd, 2007, 02:16 AM
Thanks for the vote Grey One, glad you enjoyed the picture.
These challenges are a great idea. I really appreciate the spirit that everyone participates with.
It's all fun and a "legitimate" reason to chase train related stuff is a plus too.
It reminds me of something I once heard about fishing....
If you sit by the river drinking beer, you're a bum.. but if you have a fishing pole, you're a sportsman.
If you're chasing trains for a contest... well, you get the idea.

Great pictures everyone.
