SD45-T2 9238 has just battled 90 miles of mountain running, and at the end of the run, you can see the pollen from the pine trees has stuck to the outside of the journal.

Front of a control building where the controls for the switch are housed. The switch is on the BNSF main line used when leaving the main going on to the siding.

Doofus,

Thats a fantastic shot and something that i'm involved in Professionally is turnouts (switches) Would you have any full shots of those switches you could send me???

doofus
March 26th, 2007, 06:32 AM
I don't have any shots downloaded at this time but I can get them easy enough for you. This one is a "hand operated electric lock switch" in CTC territory. I do have some other partial shots of that switch that I took today. One has all of the electrical equipment at this particular site. Let me know what you need...........

No its not the point rail (switch) it is most likely grease that looks like the rail has cracked

I see that one side of the frog seems to have no room for the wheel flange to pass. How does this work or what is this type of switch used for? Some type of derail or spring switch? Thanks.

Movable point frog? I had seen signs denoting this before, but never looked in detail at the frog...

OC Engineer JD
March 27th, 2007, 08:31 PM
Yes, it's a moveable frog. Rails move to line route on the frog as well as the points. :)

I see that one side of the frog seems to have no room for the wheel flange to pass. How does this work or what is this type of switch used for? Some type of derail or spring switch? Thanks.

It is an automatic spring loaded frog. Notice the two cylinders to the right of the guard rail in the frog. They are spring loaded to keep the gap closed in the flangeway thus eliminating the gap the wheel would travel over while on the normal (straight rail) route. It creates a smoother ride over the turnout and cuts down on the need to build up or weld on the frog as a result of the continuous hammering they take from the wheels of the train. When the wheels travel through the frog when the turnout or switch is in the reverse position, the flange strikes the guard rail and pushes it away opening up the flangeway for the wheel flange.
