When my Grandfather would take me to MB Klein on the weekends he would talk about trains he took during the 40's-50's. He bought me B&O (Con Cor smoothsides: Capital Dome Limited etc) set which I still have (and now detailing 12 years later). He wanted to get me a Pennsy ala "Broadway Limited" but Kato was the only option at the time so we never really picked it up he passed away before we could begin let alone complete that train.
So now I'm "...on a mission from God (pron. Gahd)" (-Elwood Blues)... I was considering some Kato PA-1's, however the question arises: What is the deal with the Brunswick Green vs. Tuscan Red debate in regards to freight vs. passenger. I know I've seen GG1's in BW pictures pulling frieght and passenger and I know that they were both painted Green and Red (not at the same time I hope :D). In addition, what about PA-1's in passenger service?
Thanks Guys,
Tim

Yes, there were some GG1s in green and red at the same time.
I've seen shots from the 1950s of mixed red and green power on the same train, but most consists were matched.
The idea was red for passenger and green for freight, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't always adhered to...

I think he meant two colors on the same engine at the same time!

Excellent how about PA-1's in Passenger service? As in, were PA-1s used in pasenger service, or what color(s) were they? Yes, PA-1s were passenger engines, and they wore red - at least in the 1950s.

Would it have been possible to see Bruns. Green PA-1's in passenger service? What would be more prototypical for say mid-to-late 40's outside of using a steam loco?

Prior to 1952, all PRR power, steam, Diesel and electric, was painted Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE) also called "Brunswick green" by some. Passenger Diesels had 5 gold leaf stripes and gold leaf lettering and numbers. Freight Diesels had a single buff stripe and buff lettering and numbers. In 1952, PRR began to paint passenger Diesels tuscan red, still using gold leaf. In 1954, the five stripes, lettering and numbers were changed to buff.
The PA1's were delivered in DGLE, with 5 stripes, then repainted tuscan red, and finally again painted DGLE with a single stripe when regeared for freight service.
Almost all GG1's were DGLE. Five were painted Tuscan red to haul the Broadway Limited and the Afternoon Congo. Two were also painted silver to haul the Florida trains between Washington and New York.

Prior to 1952, all PRR power, steam, Diesel and electric, was painted Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE) also called "Brunswick green" by some. At last, a simple explanation. The PA1's were delivered in DGLE, with 5 stripes, then repainted tuscan red, and finally again painted DGLE with a single stripe when regeared for freight service. And there's the answer. For the late 40s, green 5-stripe.
