OK what are the pictures of? Just Signals?
Doug A.
February 23rd, 2007, 03:08 PM
I'm guessing they can be whatever your creative interpretation of "Signals" is. Could be a lone signal in the middle of the desert somewhere, could be a train flying through an interlocking...just get creative!
I think I'll actually be able to participate in this one, looking forward to it.

February 23rd, 2007, 08:56 PM
Doug is correct the challenge is about including a signal in your photo but it doesn't have to be specifically about the signal.
I will also have the opportunity to enter this one as I will be working out on site tomorrow so hopefully I will be able to get a few shots.

Great, been sunny all week and now a stupid front moved through...looks like a Sunday shot at best now.
This really IS a challenge!
So, 12:00 midnight Monday is actually one minute past 11:59 Sunday evening, right? Or can we take pictures all day Monday, too?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed last week's closed after 3am on Tuesday so that answers my question.

An early morning fog mutes the already drury winter landscape, sans a trio of red signals protecting trackage toward downtown Dallas. Alongside, a commuter trainset and a string of RDC's await potential assignment from their lair within Trinity Railway Express' Rock Island Yard.

One with a swish and one with out and then there is the CSX nosing into the photo. What you don't see is the UP running behind the CSX. This is a road crossing on the west edge of Chadwick Illinois on the BNSF main line. Some call it the C&I, a name from way back.

Was just thinking about maybe a contest just like this one with the recent shots, but only with older/fallen flag shots. The same topics could be used. Loads, signals, etc.
But I don't know how many would participate in such a contest.

EDIT: Nevermind...noticed mention on the last challenge about voting for multiples. Didn't pay attention on my voting I guess...kinda stinks because there were two that I was wavering back and forth on. Oh well.
BTW, I like the idea of the fallen flags. I'm assuming you mean basically the same format (new photo taken within the 72 hours) but the subject has to include a FF loco, rolling stock, etc.... correct? I saw a nice clean Frisco covered hopper the other day that I want to try to get a shot of. (it was kinda hidden) Also some decent Cotton Belt locos around still. Good stuff...this is like turning railfanning into a sport. I LIKE it.

Shaun,
Welive just outside of Martinsville off the old PRR Vandailla line and the wife works in Casey. We also get over to Greenup some too.
You still never know what you'll see, mostly CSX and UP power, plus a bit of everthing else running the rails.
I know where you live, but it's been a good while since been up that way.

yes, like... "heres a pic of a flatcar carrying pipe on a SP train in 1980" etc, this pic could be in a "loads" contest. It could be just like the contest now, just with old pics.
I kinda want to get our fallen flag pics shown more to maybe spark some more interest in the fallen flag section of the board.

Other contests are fine and dandy. I prefer we not dilute the "Challenge" - - I really like the concept of the 72-hour window to get off the couch and snap fresh pictures. Call any contest with old photos a "Post Your Best xxxxxx".

Thanks guys for all the good comments. There were a bunch of good entries and I'm appreciative of the votes and the win.
I have to say I think this is a really fun format. It's actually got me kinda excited about railfanning again.
BTW, in case anyone is curious, I was NOT standing on the tracks taking this picture. I was actually at a grade crossing, in my Tahoe, no traffic, and I only semi-stopped long enough to fire off that one shot and I was rolling again. I was actually kinda bummed, as normally the (approach-lit) signals on the other end of the yard as well as at the West Irving TRE station (not visible at the top of the hill in the photo) are illuminated making for what could have been a much more "signal-esque" photo.
