View Full Version : 8 Gbyte Cards for $80?

Just a few years ago, I remarked to a friend that one Gbyte then cost a cheap $100. Now a Gbyte costs $10. I now have 24s Gbyte of storage on four cards: two 8 Gbytes and two 4 Gbytes. The old cards, at 512 Mbytes, are just toast. Since they weigh nothing and take up no space, they are still in my camera bag, but I doubt they'll ever see the light of the digital.
My first 5 Mbyte hard drive cost $1500.
Actually, I should probably re-examine the postal package. Maybe I bought four!

I hear some cameras can't use the SDHC cards. If they don't offer a firmware upgrade, you get to buy a whole new camera.

I've heard that. I have no problems with Nikon D-70 and D-100.

Maybe this is about a different type of card?
Just for fun, during a shopping excursion last week, I was browsing. (Mine uses XD.) Stopped in Target, Costco, etc, etc. The cheapest 1GB seen, was a generic brand at $24.99.

I got a 1GB Xd card for my Fiji the day after Thanksgiving for 20 bones. That was good, but local retailers want at least $40 for the same card.

Yes, I'm all ears. My 2GB Ultra II CF cards were recently on sale at Best Buy for $34.99 but I was heading out of town and missed the sale. I would like to get an Extreme III (or IV) 4 or 8GB card instead, but the Ultra II's are pretty good cards still and the 2GB card I have now will last me quite a while even at full rez.
I was thinking of a use for the 512's...if cheap enough ($2-3?) you could just use them as giveways like CD's. Put a "best of" compilation of some of your railfanning/modelling pics and then give them to railfans or modellers that you meet out in the field...kinda like a business card. Tell them to download the pics and send you some of theirs back on the card. Just a thought.

Was that a Fuji card? Or a generic brand name such as Sandisk?

I have several Sandisk CF cards... I was shooting with the Ultra II cards (1 & 2 gig) and was pleased with their performance. I bought an Extreme III 4.0 gig card when I got my XTi. It has room for over 1000 large, uncompressed photos and is very fast. (But it wasn't $80 :omg: )

It's a Q-Memory (?) compact flash card that I bought from Interplanetary Media. I see that they are at $140 today, so it must have been a special deal a few weeks ago. I didn't remember ordering until the package came. Still, $140 ain't bad!

I have one of those Kodak digital camers (4 megapixel) that I use a 256K chip in. I may be able to upgrade to 512K, but I don't know what the camera will take. I did buy the chip at WalMArt here in Sherman not long after I got the camera.
Hmm........one chip for stills, another (larger memory) for videos........that sounds doable..........hmmmmm............

Office Depot or Office Max, IIRC. My wife braved the day-after Thanksgiving insanity, I stayed in bed! ;)

For that price, I'd definitely have been out of bed! Ha ha!
How did she find it was on sale? Accidental? Mailed flyer? ) Which we never receive.) We have an Office Max, and Staples. But rarely go there. Not much need to stop in. Maybe twice a year.

She found it in a newspaper flyer....
On a side note, the Canon Digital Rebel Xt was on sale a few weeks ago at one of the office stores for $550.... A steal at a store in this town! Too bad the cash wasn't there...

I think I saw Rebel XTi's around $799 also! As usual, when the new units come out, the old units drop (like a rock!)
