What was the reason some SP GP40-2s had an extra long hood something like the SDP45s? Did they have steam generators at one time?

I think if you look back far enough you will find the units were bought for the San Francisco commute service. At that time they were still using the Harriman cars with steam heat and the boiler was placed in the rear of the loco.

These locos also had different gearing and would get to and run at higher speeds that a normal freight loco.

I may be wrong but thats my two cents worth.

Yes. Those were the replacement units for the F-M Trainmaster units in that San Jose commute service. As originally delivered they had small fuel tanks, not the 3600 (?) gallon tanks showing in the photgraph.
