I drove a cattle truck from IL to points east and south I know what the crews are going through. Some times the freight seemed more important then the employee getting sleep.

We've all known, for a long time, that crew fatigue is dangerous. Tired is tired. No matter your occupation. When will there be some serious action?

When called out of my away terminal "on my rest"(8 hrs), and showed up late because I fell back asleep,:embarassed: I was confronted by the trainmaster. I planned my rest accordingly based on the train lineup that I had printed when I tied up. I stood for a train 14 HOURS AFTER I TIED UP!!! Here I am getting called 6 HOURS EARLY!!!!:omg: Gee, now wonder I fell back asleep. His reply: " you had 8 hours off" I was so pissed off, I bad ordered every single unit in my consist, and got my nap while they fixed 'em.
But seriously, fatigue is no joke. I've been in some bad situations due to fatigue...

I wonder how many hours off he had? And how many of those were restful sleep? He may be stressed and tired. But seems as though that's a different scenario.

There won't be any action taken until some on the "old heads" that think they can take the abuse in order to rack up the hours wise up. Several attempts have been made by railroad managements on the class I's to better schedule crew callups, but it has been voted down by those whose mortgage and credit card balances require that they work until they drop.
The only people on a railroad with a higher divorce rate than trainmasters are division superintendents. Neither ever get to spend any time at home. :omg:

8 hours off is not 8 hours rest. we are required to put off on the ticket in the locker room, then wait for a ride to show up to take us to the hotel. the ride can be 30 minutes or more. checking into the hotel usually takes about 15 minutes. now you are down to 7 hours 15 minutes "rest time". factor in the 2 hour call for work and it goes to 5 hours 15 minutes. on top of all that, I don't know many people who can fall asleep as soon as they lie down. a lot of times I'll tell my conductor to put me in for 10 hours undisturbed.

LOL! I love it.
Several years ago, a hogger buddy of mine red-tagged EVERY switch
engine on line at Eola IL.(BNSF). All were for verifiable FRA violations.
What is even better, the R.F.E. agreed with him!
Good on ya, my friend!

Funny, when ever I bid/get forced to the yard, all the switch engines seem to get fixed in a hurry:teeth: Guess they got tired of me bad ordering the power every day:cry: Love them GP39-2's, they're usually good for excessive brake travel.

If you are tired, you can just move yourself from the turn to the conductor's extra board. If you have enough seniority, you can pick your spot on the board by bumping a less senior guy off. No, railroad workers schedule their own times. It's a Union thing, let the Union fix it.

Also they like to "throw" brake shoes! One of the locos my buddy tagged was missing a brake shoe, dunno how that was ever overlooked.
