I am going to post this here because I think it more relevant to railfaning than electronics.
What kind of scanner is a good scanner for listening and locating trains?

I don't know what the latest model is but Radio Shack usually has a good hand held one for sale. The one I have from there is probably 20 years old by now and still giving good service.

Any scanner that is out today is good for railroad listening. You don't need to buy one that is high priced. A very, very good brand is Uniden. I have used there scanners for over 20 years now, and I find they are the best. I own eight Unidens, one old Regency and a Radio Shack (some made by Uniden).
If you can't find one local, try this site...

I have ordered from them, they are very good.

My RD scanner is 17 years old and still works fine. I used to take it when I caught the train at Chicago to the East coast. Once when we had a dragging equipment response from a detector on the water level line across upstate New York one of the Conductors came pass my room and stopped to ask me what was happening. He was without a scanner??? His one word reply is not printable here.

Don't think we need to worry about trunking on the major railroads - at least for a while. My little pocket size Radio Shack scanner is great - and I've dropped it so many times I lost count - it still keeps going. Only needs two AA nicad rechargeables to operate.

Naw, you don't need to get one with trunking. Having one with it wouldn't hurt, but its not needed.

I have a RS scanner, 200 channels. It works well enough for my uses. I have dropped it a few times, and it keeps on ticking so far...... I do highly recommend ditching the stock 'rubber ducky' antenna, and get a decent antenna.
I forget what models my antennae are, but I'll check, and get back to ya'll... :)

I got a Diamond RH77CA, and some other antenna I bought just for 160-161 MHZ.... I cannot for the life of me remember where I got it!
