In every book you read that Loewy designed the shell of the GG1. However, I know a guy who is sure that Loewy only designed the paint scheme of the GG1. So: is this guy right, and if, who designed the shell???

Loewy's website (http://www.raymondloewy.com/index.html) says he designed the GG1 (http://www.raymondloewy.com/about/career.html) for the Pennsylvania RR in 1936.

This picture is also on his website.

So, I am not sure. He did design a lot of things.

Here they say that Loewy did some changes on the carbody, and major changes on the livery: http://www.spikesys.com/GG1/

Was in Strasburg PA yesterday at the Pennslvania State RR Museum. They have the first GG1 there. It's stored outside awaiting restoration. I didn't know that the first GG1's had a rivited carbody while later ones were all welded.

That was one of the changes Loewy made.

New Haven boxcab electric EP-3a was the original inspiration. The first GG1 was riveted, later ones were welded. Lowey did design the carbody.

Loewy did more than just paint schemes. The GG1 carbody styling was one fine example of his work.

The P5 boxcab was the inspiration of the GG1, and Loewy only made it look better. The P5 was there before the GG1.

Everything I've ever read talked about Loewy hating rivets. On the Missouri Pacific's initial Eagle trainset, ACF didn't yet have Budd's shotwelding tech., so Loewy designed a metal strip that covered the rivets. Only this original trainset had the strip, all the later diesels and cars were strip-less.
