I'm currious to see what the other B&O fans out there have, in any scale.
Here are a few of mine, all N scale:

Rick - The Wagontop is a very old Camden and Amboy kit that was supposed to be an I-17. The kit was so rough and out of square that by the time I finished straighting out the kinks, it no longer looked the part of an I-17. I whittled and rounded, moved some windows, and added the ribbing and came up with an I-12 Wagontop.

I made an I-17 years ago out of a Rivarossi bay window. May make a few more that way. JnJ is supposed to have their I-12 in production right now. Be interesting to see how they turn out.

Here is one more from me. I picked this up for $4 at a trainshow junk table just for a chance to work with a brass/stainless kit. It was assembled but pretty poorly. When I got home, I happened to be looking through an old Classic Trains, and found a shot of the exact car finishing out a B&O train. It turns out the car was a B&O/C&O prototype so I stripped it, fixed the roof and added the tail light housing, and repainted it appropriately. I was even lucky enough that Microscale has the correct car name on their passenger car decal set.

N scale. One of my favorite cars of all. I mixed the green/blue paint using some instructions. I don't know if it was really prototype or not. Micro Scale decals with a nice Chessie logo on a MDC undec gondola.

This is a Concor-Kato N scale boxcar. It was one of the very early ones by Concor and a lot better than the ones they made later. Funny that Kato never did make US prototype boxcars after this as this was really a very good model. This is also one of my favorites because it is different from the other boxcars available.

How close is the Atlas/Riv smoothside to this car?
skipgear
February 7th, 2007, 04:57 AM
I have a few of the older Atlas smoothsides and compared the two. They aren't the same car but you could probably make a passable substitute. The biggest errors are, the window arrangment, the roundness of the rear of the car, and the lack of corrugations on the side of the car. Smaller issues are the skirting and lack of the high tail light.
This corrugations and skirting could be fixed with one overlay. The windows would be too much work to be worth it. The high tail light is easy, I had to do it to the kit above also.
I have hoarded a batch of the old Atlas cars in hopes that I can find something B&O that they are close too. I haven't had any luck yet. I think they may end up being chassis' for a Cincinnatian car set that I am planning to build.
The car kit used above can be found here and there. I see them go on Ebay every once in a while for around $20-25. Just search for C&O because the car was originally made for the C&O. They only lasted a few year as C&O cars then were sold to B&O. There are two valid car names for B&O, the Wawanee above and the Napanee.

Thats what I figured, close but no ceegar. Do you happen to know the manufacturer of the brass-side kit? Where are you getting the Cincinnatan car sides? Currently I am getting a ton of the old ROWA cars since they are very close to C&O > B&O cars. I also need to get a smoothside to make a GN Big Blue Dome/Coach that the B&O bought later on...

Tom - Beautiful layout. I can't stomache weathering cars either. I spend time to build and paint them, too turn around and dirty them up just isn't right. Maybe I will get over that eventually.
Sizemore - I can't remember the company. It is not one that is current if I remember correctly.
As far as the Cincinnatian cars, I have drawings complete. I have a vinyl cutter and I was planning on cutting the sides in layers on that out of .005 styrene. The cutter won't cut all the way through but it scores the plastic well enough that I can fold and break out the cuts. I have one side put together as a test and it worked better than expected. As a back up plan, if I get a car built and I don't like it, I have been assembling the parts to do photo etching. I may try my hand at that. Chris333 has been having great success with Z scale stuff so I think I can pull it off in N.
The loco so far. It will be going on a MP Pacific chassis. Waiting on a motor and gearing to finish.

I thought I would try to bring this back to life a bit. Here is the 2-10-2 shown earlier in the topic after a little fine tuning. I lowered the headlight and added the number boards to the side of it (no numbers yet). I also repainted the smoke box and side rods with neolube. It gives a better graphite color than I could replicate with paint.

B&O Napanee, built from a MRC/Rowa observation. It is actually the correct car body for this car. I removed the numberboards on the fluting to the back of the car, drilled out the roof to make the tail light operational, added Kato trucks with pickup for lighting and painted the interior.
If I remember from talking to Bob before, the EM-1 is an S scale model. I have shots from another modeler with one also.
Bob,
You really need to do a nice photo essay of that EM-1 so I can start making parts for mine...

I don't have a picture, but I have ONE (count them, 1!) B&O boxcar. But it is a brass model I built up in N scale from a Quality Craft kit. Built it over 10 years ago (and put the door guide on upside down :(
But I am happy with it, consider it one of my railroad-specific SIGNATURE freight cars.
I have a Fine N Scale resin PRR round top double-door boxcar,
a Red Caboose PRR X-29 single-door boxcar,
a Puget Sound Milwaukee horizontal-ribbed double-door boxcar,
my kitbashed MicroTrains US Navy 1 1/2 door 50' PS-1 (said to be the only 1 1/2 door 50' PS-1s)
several Fine N Scale Santa Fe Caswell drop-bottom gondolas.
I keep saying I am someday going to build a Santa Fe BX-3 panel-side boxcar. Someday...

B&O had four of these cars....
Napanee
Wawasee
Dana
Metcalf
Napanee & Wawasee were the normal observation car used on the Capitol Limited. The Dana and Metcalf, had diaphragms mounted on their observation ends and were used as mid-train lounges between DC & Willard, where the Ambassador's train was split from the Capitol Limited for the final run to Detroit, where these cars were then the observation cars for the Ambassador. The cars were a part of the C&O's late 40's passenger car order that were sold off to other roads when the C&O's passenger vision turned out to be wrong.

It's sad to think that even as late as 1961 there was an EM-1 and a T-3 4-8-2 rusting away at Butler, PA. It's a shame that both of these could not have wound up in the B&O Train Museum. An EM-1 was supposed to be donated to the museum, but for some reason never made it.
