I see a couple of those I like. I don't really have any experience with train DVDs. Does anyone have an opinion on which ones might be good?

BTW, I can't play my VHS anymore, you know. That happens when you go really modern. :D

I bought two. One title offered was Emperer of the North, which I was surprised they carried.

I really enjoy their DVDs. Most of mine are the ones that deal with the American southwest roads and regions, and I bought the Alco series because I like the old beasts. The dozen I have seem pretty well done. They do this sale every year, I think.

Flash,
I have a bunch of Pentrex DVD's. All are first class. The Mexico Pacifico DVD was first released on VHS in 1992. It is really neat to see how railroading was / is in Mexico. Hopefully, Pentrex will put the rest of the Mexico series on DVD.

Pentrex does a sale every year but this is the best one yet. Take advantage if you can.

SUNRISE/SUNSET - A DAY AT GIBBON JUNCTION!
73 TRAINS IN 73 MINUTES!

ON SALE THIS WEEK ONLY - $19.95!

Here's your opportunity to sit back and enjoy an entire day's activity at what some say is the busiest all-freight railroad junction in the world - Union Pacific's Gibbon Junction. Fifteen hours of incredible train watching have been condensed into 73 action-packed minutes featuring 73 different trains!

Located twenty-nine miles west of Grand Island, Nebraska, and fourteen miles east of Kearney, Gibbon Junction is the meeting point for Union Pacific's Marysville Subdivision and the east/west Nebraska Division mainline. Pentrex arrived on the scene before sunrise on a long summer's day in 1997. The first movement was captured 6:10 AM and our day ended at 9:00 PM - seventy-three trains later! Freight, coal, and intermodal trains and local freights all make an appearance. Great weather, a fantastic mix of equipment, and the sheer volume of trains combine to bring you a remarkable video experience. Train symbols with origins and destinations are shown for most movements, as well as the time of day and other statistics. Join us at Gibbon Junction, from sunrise to sunset!

I have that on VHS- if you don't like beaucoup trains, don't bother buying :D

This was shot before the new trackwork on the Marysville Sub, which changed things at Gibbon Jct. somewhat. Still, an awful lot of trains, and well worth the money spent. Hate Borgrail all you want, but as far as frequency, UP can put on a show on their Overland Route.

Friscobob gives this two thumbs up:thumbs_up:

SANTA FE'S MOJAVE MAINLINE!
NOW ON DVD!
JUST $19.95 UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY, 3/20/07!

SANTA FE'S MOJAVE MAINLINE
In 1992, Santa Fe was sending train after train across California's Mojave Desert, making the Needles Subdivision one of the busiest lines in the nation. Running between Needles and Barstow, this rugged stretch was an essential link in the railroad's cross-country mainline. It also traversed some of the most barren desert scenery where stark vistas framed by eroded mountains created dramatic settings for high-powered trains. Severe weather conditions put men and equipment to the test on the Mojave main.

Pentrex takes you back to 1992 to witness the struggle as Santa Fe sends its trains over this remote dessert crossing. From Needles, we head west passing Java, Homer, Goffs, Essex, Cadiz, Amboy, Bagdad, Siberia, Ash Hill, Ludlow, and Daggett to reach Barstow. The long grades of the area's hills force the engines to work hard. Overlooking Ash Hill, we stop at a vantage point to watch heavy loads straining over the grade. The variety of motive power spotted along our journey is fascinating and includes SD45-2s, SDF40-2, SD45s, GP60, GP40X, SD40-2s, FP45s, GP60Ms, GE B40-8s and B40-8Ws. As the newer locomotives flash past our camera on the flatlands, red and silver Warbonnet paint appears to leave brilliant streaks of color in the air. Pure sets of power in classic yellow-and-blue paint stand out handsomely against the rough countryside. Our tour includes video graphics to help identify the different photo locations throughout this presentation. It's a view of Santa Fe railroading at its finest!

Cab Forwards - New DVD!
Three Years in the Making!
The Most Comprehensive Coverage of Cab Forwards Ever Assembled!
In Stock and Ready to Ship!

In the tradition of excellence seen in "Union Pacific Big Boy Collection" and "Union
Pacific Streamliner Collection" comes this brand-new production --

SOUTHERN PACIFIC CAB FORWARD COLLECTION
The Complete Story of Southern Pacific's Mighty 4-8-8-4 Articulated Locomotives!

For nearly 47 years, the Southern Pacific Railroad relied upon its massive AC-type
steam locomotives to haul freight and passenger trains throughout California and
neighboring states. Built to provide the power and flexibility demanded by the
mountainous passes they traversed, these giants were constructed with their cab in
front of the boiler, thus earning them the name Cab Forwards. The last Cab Forward
revenue train ran in 1956, after which all but one were scrapped. From then on, film
coverage of these AC-class engines was eagerly sought, hard to locate, and highly
prized. Now, after years of research, Pentrex has assembled an awesome collection of
footage and still images of Southern Pacific AC-1s through AC-12s spanning the years
1927 to 1956.

You'll see Cab Forwards in service on the Overland Route, the San Joaquin Line, the
Sunset Route, the Coast Route, the Shasta Route, and the Modoc Line. You'll thrill
to incredible images of Cab Forwards in the snow, on grades, bridges, and scenic
valleys; running with mid-train and rear-end helpers; teamed with Black Widow
F-units and GS-class helpers; and in meets with other CF's. The locomotives shown
include nearly every class of Articulated Consolidation SP rostered: the
Baldwin-built Cab Forwards and the Lima-built 3900 class AC-9s. Historic stills of
the original cab forwards, the Baldwin-built MC, MM, and AM class engines, are also
featured. Plus, author Dr. Bob Church and photographer Stan Kistler provide
insightful insiders' views. This is the most comprehensive record of the legendary
Cab Forwards ever presented on film and it belongs in every railfan's collection!

BRAND NEW DVD!
"SOUTHERN PACIFIC CAB FORWARD COLLECTION" --
WE'RE ALREADY HEARING BACK FROM VERY HAPPY CUSTOMERS WHO ARE THRILLED WITH IT!

It's only been out a week but the praise is rolling in!
"ONE OF THE BEST PROGRAMS ON THE SUBJECT!"
"GREAT COMMENTARY!"
"UP TO YOUR USUAL HIGH STANDARDS. EXCELLENT JOB!"
"THANKS, PENTREX!"

Here's a question we've been asked about the SP Cab Forward Collection:
"IS IT MOSTLY FOOTAGE FROM OTHER SHOWS?"

The answer is No! The majority of footage has not been picked up from other Pentrex videos. You may see some familiar scenes if you already own every Pentrex DVD that includes shots of Cab Forwards but the majority is new, never-before-seen images for you to enjoy. We spent years looking for new material for this show in an effort to product the most comprehensive collection possible.

Another question is:
"WHAT'S IN THE BONUS FOOTAGE?"

The highlight of the 15-minute bonus footage is wonderful coverage of #4294 being moved into the California State Railroad Museum in 1981. You'll also get more insider details about such subjects as why Cab Forwards were not seen doubleheading freight trains on certain routes, new paint versus steam cleaning, and other interesting tidbits of information.

THIS SHOW DEFINITELY BELONGS IN EVERY RAILFAN'S LIBRARY!

NORTHWEST DOUBLEHEADER STEAM
On May 18 and 19, 2007, the Union Pacific 844 and Southern Pacific 4449 steam
locomotives made history by doubleheading for the first time ever between Tacoma and
Everett, Washington. Pentrex was on hand to capture the excitement created by a
private excursion to and from Tacoma and Everett on Friday as well as Saturday's
round-trip public excursion, the "Puget Sound Steam Special." We also followed the
engines on their doubleheaded return from Tacoma to Portland and chased the UP 844
on its way back home through the Columbia River Gorge and over the Blue Mountains of
Eastern Oregon.

These powerful Northern-type locomotives switched point position at Everett on both
days of the Tacoma-Everett runs. You'll have ample opportunity to see engine looking
great at the head of the train. Cool, overcast weather only served to make their
billowing clouds of steam and smoke even more dramatic! The spectacular scenery
along the Puget Sound created a perfect backdrop for great steam action. You'll see
the locomotives thundering across Salmon Bay Bridge, rolling through Sunnyside Beach
and Harbor View Parks, and racing along the flowing curves of the Sound.
Doubleheaded steam with two of the country's most popular locomotives in one of the
nation's most beautiful sites just can't be beat!

The line between Tacoma and Everett is a busy doubletrack mainline owned by BNSF
with UP trackage rights. This allowed us to see plenty of freight action there as
well as on the trip from Tacoma to Portland and through the Columbia River Gorge. As
a special treat we're including almost one hour of bonus footage featuring exciting

================================================== ===========

IMPERIAL VALLEY SUGAR BEET TRAINS
Video Rails was on hand to capture Southern Pacific's last sugar beet train from the
Imperial Valley to the mill near Guadalupe, California so it could record the ending
of an era and now this incredible story is available to you on DVD!

Our journey begins in the lush farmlands of the Imperial Valley, 420 rail miles away
from the Holly Sugar Mill at Betteravia. There you'll watch as sugar beets are
harvested, transported to receiving stations, and then loaded into the wooden
gondolas, with their friction bearing axles, that made SP's unit beet trains so
unique. The loaded trains of up to 100 steel and wooden cars hauling 10,000 tons of
sugar beets depart El Centro, heading toward Taylor Junction in L.A. and along the
Coast Line to their destination in the Santa Maria Valley. Helper units are often
added for the push over Beaumont Hill, as you'll see on several of the trains. At
Taylor Junction, we're invited into the cab of SD40 7349 on the point of a 3-unit
lash-up that includes two SD45s. The cab ride to Guadalupe features tunnels, cuts,
and blue Pacific Ocean views as well as meets and passes with intermodal hotshots
and Amtrak trains. At the interchange yard in Guadalupe, the Santa Maria Valley
Railroad's new GP-9 arrives to transfer the gondolas to the Holly Sugar Mill. Then
we're treated to a complete tour of the refining process, from unloading to washing,
pulping, purifying, drying, and bagging the granulated sugar. This is one of the
most interesting railroading stories ever shown!

SOUTHERN PACIFIC CAB FORWARD COLLECTION
The Complete Story of Southern Pacific's Mighty 4-8-8-2 Articulated Locomotives!

SUMMER ON THE ALASKA RAILROAD!

"ALASKA VOLUME 1 - STEEL RAILS, MIDNIGHT SUN"
BRAND NEW DVD!

This is all-new footage for Pentrex! The original show was filmed and released by
Mind's I Productions in 1993. It was shown on television and was a very popular VHS
video.

Customers have been asking for a DVD of this show so Pentrex arranged with Mind's I
to produce the DVD version. (We'll also be producing the DVDS for two more Mind's I
Alaska shows in the coming months.)

ALASKA VOLUME 1 focuses on one day's operation on The Alaska Railroad, recording
each of the trains dispatched from 7 in the morning to 1 AM the following morning on
a busy June day in 1993.

This new DVD, subtitled "Steel Rails, Midnight Sun -- Summer on the Alaska Railroad"
is an entirely different program from the Pentrex DVD called "The Alaska Railroad"
which was filmed in 1984, almost ten years prior.

LIMITED-TIME SPECIAL OFFER!
ALASKA VOLUME 1 DVD IS ON SALE FOR $19.95!
See the full description below, then place your orders now AND SAVE!!
================================================== ===========

ALASKA VOLUME 1
STEEL RAILS, MIDNIGHT SUN - SUMMER ON THE ALASKA RAILROAD

Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater level up 2,360 feet to
the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual
twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of
extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger
captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series of VHS videos and
now Pentrex is proud to bring these programs to you on DVD, beginning with Volume 1:
Steel Rails/Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

In 1993, the Alaska Railroad could field up to 17 trains covering up to 3,300 train
miles in any given 24-hour period. These included two passenger extras; overnight
freights and freight expresses; oil tanker, unit coal, and rock trains; work extras;
and others. The AR's all-GM locomotive fleet, which sported three different color
schemes, was made up of GP-40-2s, GP-49s, GP-38-2s, GP-35s, GP-7s, and MP-15s.
Cabooses could still be seen at the ends of some trains. You'll get plenty of
opportunity to enjoy these trains at work! After a brief look at a derailment
earlier that spring, you'll follow the operations of the line starting at 7 AM on a
busy June day and carry on into the evening, ending with a meet illuminated by the
midnight sun at 1 AM. The trains are dispatched from Anchorage under Track Warrant
Control and you'll view the dispatcher's display boards to see siding and train
status in between catching the action at Eklunta, Matanuska, Talkeetna, Broad Pass,
Healy, Clear Site, Nenana, and other locations. Highlights include a unit coal train
pulled by 6 matched GP-49s, a passenger extra at Denali Park, action on the tall
trestle spanning Hurricane Gulch, and of course the incredible skylines of craggy,
snow-capped mountains reaching up from floors of emerald green forests!

Produced by Mind's I Productions in 1993. DVD released by Pentrex 2007.

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE VOLUME 2!
NEW DVD NOW AVAILABLE!

YOU'VE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS DVD EVER SINCE VOLUME 1 WAS RELEASED...

================================================== ===========

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE VOLUME 2
UNION PACIFIC'S PORTLAND SUBDIVISION
Climbing gently from the tidewater ports near Portland, Oregon is the Columbia River
Gorge-a wide, flat-water river passage that provides access to the inland
agricultural regions of Washington and Oregon and divides the two states along most
of their border. It is a spot of unparalleled beauty that hosts two railroad lines:
BNSF to the north and Union Pacific along the southern shore.

In Columbia River Gorge Volume I: BNSF's Fallbridge Subdivision, Pentrex explored
the BNSF side of the Gorge, heading east from Vancouver, Washington to the arid
desert mountains near the John Day Dam. Now, in Volume 2, we jump across the river
to head back west toward Portland following Union Pacific's Portland Subdivision.
We'll visit many of the region's best railfanning spots, such as Biggs, Celilo Park,
The Dalles, Memaloose State Park, Mosier, and Hood River with the Mount Hood Scenic
Railroad. We'll travel through the Viento State Park area to Wyeth, Cascade Locks,
Bonneville Dam, and the spectacular Multnomah Falls. At Troutdale, the mainline
splits into two routes to Portland and we'll visit the junction there before heading
into the city.

The trains you'll see include Canpotex unit potash trains, Spokane International
mixed freights, container, grain, trailer, and stack trains, and Amtrak's Pioneer.
Motive power varies from SD40-2s to SD60Ms, SD70Ms, leased SD90MACs, Dash 40-CW,
AC4400-CW, GE AC6000, Geeps, and more. CP, BNSF, and C&NW power also make
appearances. These images were captured from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s,
giving you a chance to see some of the older and newest power in use. With its
incredible scenery and nonstop parade of interesting trains and motive power, it's
no wonder UP's Portland Sub is one of the best railroading hotspots of the nation!

EVER WONDERED WHAT IT'S LIKE TO RIDE A CIRCUS TRAIN?

"CIRCUS TRAIN ADVENTURE"
NEW DVD! $19.95!

- Ride aboard the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Blue Unit Circus Train!

- Experience the passing world from the vestibule of the Ringmaster's car!
- See elephants being off-loaded for water breaks and tour the Ringmaster's private quarters!
- Learn what it's like to be a passenger on this traveling city!

From 2001 to 2005, while Kevin Venardos was Ringmaster for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, his father would join him aboard the Circus Train at every opportunity, recording his journeys from a totally unique vantage point-the vestibule of the Ringmaster's car! The resulting footage allows you to discover what it's like to travel aboard the Blue Unit Circus Train and view the passing countryside just as if you were a member of the crew!

Most of the scenes are taken from the vestibule, but there are a few fascinating run-bys that show the Blue and Red Unit trains at interesting locations such as on Tehachapi Loop and street running in Anaheim. You'll also see many of the yards where the train sections are placed during performances and watch speeding freights whip past your nose while your train's waiting in the siding. Every minute is filled with some new experience in this entertaining view of America by rail from aboard the Circus Train!

NORFOLK SOUTHERN IN THE HEART OF APPALACHIA!

"ALONG THE POCAHONTAS DISTRICT - Coal Trains & Time Freights"
It's the mid 1990s and you're touring the "Pokey" from Williamson to Bluefield, West
Virginia to watch heavy coal trains labor upgrade and speeding time-freights rush
across the system. The rugged terrain of this mountainous district is a challenge to
the railroad. Eighteen tunnels bore through the mountains and the tracks cross back
and forth over numerous bridges. The area's steep grades bring most trains to a
crawl and helpers are often needed. You'll visit a coal mine where strings of
hoppers are being topped off. Mine runs with cabooses are seen, as well as fleets of
heavy mainline coal drags pulled by NS's newest locomotives. Along the Pokey the
scenery is spectacular and the obstacles are met with brute horsepower and
ingenuity!

"ALASKA VOLUME 2 - WHERE TRAINS FLY AND EAGLES SOAR!"
SEWARD AND WHITTIER SUBDIVISIONS ON THE ALASKA RAILROAD
NEW ON DVD!
$19.95 SALE!

The Alaska Railroad series continues with a fascinating look at operations on the
Seward and Whittier Subdivisions during the summer of 1994. We'll treat you to a
3-day tour of the lines between Anchorage, Whittier and Seward, trackage that runs
past the incredibly scenic vistas of Turnagain Arm and Kenai Fjords National Park.
The route from Seward to Portage takes the trains over the crest of Kenai at 1,060
feet, up 3 percent grades, and through 5 tunnels! Traffic on the Whittier and Seward
Subs consists of Anchorage-to-Seward passenger trains; the Whittier Shuttle carrying
passengers, cars, and trucks; unit coal trains; and freights that serve the rail
barges. These are led by GM diesels including GP35s and GP38s, GP40s and GP49s, plus
a few surprises such as an F7-B and a Budd RDC. You'll also see many cabooses at the
ends of these trains.

The highlights of our show feature the Port of Whittier where the Trainmaster
juggles 10 trains and 2 rail barges against 20-foot tides with only one GP30 switch
engine, a passenger train made up of former SP bi-level coaches, rides through the
tunnels aboard the Shuttle, a 6-unit lash-up of 5 GP49s and one GP40 leading a heavy
coal train, maintenance-of-way equipment, and a special military move. But not to be
overlooked is the astonishing beauty of red sunsets, towering snow-draped mountains,
and sea green glaciers that are backdrops to the silhouettes of these trains.
Produced in 1996. Released on DVD in 2007.

$29.95 LIMITED-TIME SALE!

"THE ULTIMATE CAJON SUBDIVISION!"
From the great San Bernardino Valley to the high desert community of Barstow lies
one of the busiest and most scenic mainlines in the country. At just over 81 miles
in length, the BNSF Cajon Sub is a powerful artery that plays an integral role in
moving trains to and from Southern California. Pentrex takes you on a journey of
epic proportions across this railroading hot spot. For close to five years, leaving
almost no mile undocumented, filming over 500 trains during winter snowstorms and
summer heat, we searched out incredible photo locations to take you into the heart
of this line as it's never been seen before!

BNSF, Union Pacific, and Amtrak deliver nonstop thrills here. These trains are
covered on the Mojave Desert between Barstow and Victorville as well as on the
challenging Pass. We also capture the action on Union Pacific's Colton-Palmdale
Cutoff as it parallels the BNSF on Cajon Pass. Discs 1 and 2 explore the lines in
detail from San Bernardino to Barstow. Discs 3 and 4 take you back to San Bernardino
with all new footage. None of the images you see here have been used in any other
production. This is 12 hours of all new material and there's so much to see, you
won't want to miss a second!

ACROSS MARIAS PASS: $9.95 Sale!
On Burlington Northern's transcontinental mainline over the rugged Rocky Mountains,
one scenic splendor after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the
mountain pass. It's the pre-merger days of the early 1990s as Pentrex explores the
line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of Browning. You'll see trains snake
their way through the tunnels and along the banks of the wild middle fork of the
Flathead River. After crossing over the high bridges and through the famous snow
sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the summit. On the east slope,
desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You'll see
trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. No
matter how often you've been here before, you won't want to miss this vision of
magnificent Marias Pass! VHS produced in 1991. Released on DVD 2008.
1 Hour 30 Minutes. Product Code: #MARIAS-DVD. Regular Price: $29.95.

CASS SCENIC RAILROAD: $9.95 Sale!
Pentrex takes you back to 1990 to experience the extra runs and excitement of
Railfan Weekend and discover why Cass draws crowds back year after year. A parade of
steam opens the event with three Shay locomotives running side-by-side down the
triple tracks, spitting out great billows of steam and thrilling the crowd with
their antics. Then the Shays triple-head to Bald Knob at the top of Black Allegheny
Mountain with a passenger train in tow, followed closely by a vintage log train
pulled by the railroad's Heisler locomotive. You'll ride in the cabs of several
Shays as the firemen work intensely to keep the hungry engines fueled. The
locomotives' intricate systems of shafts, flywheels, and gears are seen close up as
they strain to pull the trains uphill. Cass Scenic has it all: unusual locomotives,
vintage cars, and fabulous scenery! VHS produced in 1990. Released on DVD 2008.
52 Minutes. Product Code: #CASS-DVD. Regular Price: $29.95.

TRIBUTE TO TENNESSEE PASS: $9.95 Sale!
When word spread that Union Pacific was closing the pass in 1997, Pentrex traveled
to this revered line to document its final months of operation. Our efforts were
rewarded with a high volume of movements and an outstanding mix of trains. Coal
trains slug it out on the 3 percent grade leading to the 10,000-foot summit.
Colorado's highest snow-capped mountains loom over toiling freights. Squealing
flanges echo off canyon walls as trains grind through serpentine curves, past the
raging waters of the Arkansas River. Up to nine of UP's newest AC-powered giants are
needed to lug tonnage across the pass. It's this type of intense action and
spectacular scenery that made the line so idolized! VHS produced in 1997. Released
on DVD 2008.
1 Hour 40 Minutes. Product Code: #TRIBUTE-DVD. Regular Price: $29.95.

Several safety films, one on the building of Barstow Yard, another on the operations of the hump yard at Argentine, one on safe handling of freight. Lots of 50s, 60s and 70s vintage diesels and rolling stock included. That first safety film is geared toward MOW workers, and goes over the right and wrong way to use the tools of their trade. The second is how to work safely in the yard, including getting on & off cabooses, locomotives, freight cars, etc. (NOTE: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, TRY THIS YOURSELF!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!)

This may not be chock-full of runbys, but it does show the nuts & bolts, as it were, of railroad operation.
