I was looking for some information on Katy red. I found the Katy RR Historical Society website (http://www.katyrailroad.org/). Pretty good answer here.

Q5: What model railroad paint is closest to Katy Red, Sloan Yellow, the later Katy Green and Yellow?
Answer: Katy Red is hard to match due to how fast the sun faded the color. Most people use Floquil ATSF red for the early diesel eras, in the Barriger era Floquil Bright Caboose Red is real close. Again all the reds faded quickly and road grime changed the color ever more. Sloan Yellow seemed to have a cream or orange hue depending on which photo is used for comparison. Floquil Reffer Yellow straight from the bottle works if you don't like a custom mix. I used DRGW Orange with a few drops of White, some suggest the Reffer Yellow with a few drops of White. The late desiel era is the easiest as Floquil makes a Katy Green, Reffer Yellow is what most use for the later yellow.

Just in case you were wondering, of course, which I do all the time. :D

I started using Acuflex Signal Red when I found it was a very close match to what some of the model makers were putting on their cars. I have a pair of Life Like Frisco E8s that I use to pull the MKT/SLSF Texas Special that I custom painted using the Signal Red. They go together very well. I have a GP7 that was sold in Japan by KATO. It is the same engine that they made for ATLAS for a while. It has a more faded looking red paint but still looks OK with one of those ATLAS engines I painted for MKT.

I used the Accuflex signal red. It was good. I have another car where I used caboose red and it is not quite correct, I think.
