I have a bunch of N-scale re-runs:

Here's a Kato F-7 unit I painted. The grab irons are made
from stainless steel tubing.

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT0488.JPG

Only recently have manufacturers like Atlas, Life-LIke, and
Intermountain offered N-scale C&O decorated locomotives,
so I have been slowly painting my own.

Here's a heavily modified Life-Like caboose - the Microscale decals
are too big so I printed my own.

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT0450.JPG

The end ladders and chain are from Micro-trains, while
the rest of the end rails were scratch built. I made the ladders
touch the roof by carefully holding the tip of a soldering iron
close to the curved part, until the ladder softened enough
and sagged down to the correct height.

N-scale C&O RSD-7s, made from MRC RSD-15 shells on Atlas dash 8 chassis with Atlas C-630 trucks.

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT0465.JPG

The pilots and end rails are modified Atlas parts. The drop steps
were built from etched venetian blinds and some scrap plastic.

I cut off the MRC fuel and air tank sides and epoxied them to the
Atlas chassis.

An N-scale C&O RSD-5, with added details. I've got two more of
these in the works that I have corrected the exhaust stack and
headlights on.
Once again, now that I will have three of them, Atlas has announced
them in N-scale, even with the same road number 5575.

Oldrk, that's some good stuff! Is the FP7 from Model Power? I picked up an Atlas NE-6 caboose in Clinchfield - I'm going to try to remove the "C.R.R." and the "Radio Equiped" symbol and then put on the C&O decals. Hope it looks OK - I'll post a pic when I'm done.

Tim,Yes it is. Lets see that caboose!

Haven't had much time to work on this - had a pipe break in the ceiling between the walls of my bedroom and bathroom on the lower level. What a mess - it's all dried out now, but it's gonna take 5 or 6 days for the contractor to put up new drywall, repaint, etc.
Anyway, got the lettering off the Atlas Clinchfield NE-6 with Solvaset and a pencil eraser. The C&O for Progress I used is from Microscale 60-47, but it's too small. The C&O for Progress from Microscale 60-1045 is way too big - but I used the Chesapeake and Ohio from this sheet (even though it's too small). Haven't figured out what number to make it. Need to paint the grab irons yellow...

Nice hoppers, Rasputen. I have to add more weight to my Roundhouse hoppers. I have been finding a few undecorated Atlas hoppers at train shows (even though they're too modern), and have the Microscale decals for them - just need to get it done. I wish I could find a few more pre-lettered hoppers that would fit in the early 1950's era...

Here are two more N-scale RSD-5s I finally finished:
http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT0689.JPG
The C&OHS had an excellent article on these, and I noticed in many of the photos that at the forward facing door of the cab is open. I bought some extra shells and cabs from the Atlas parts department and went to work. I cut out the openings from one cab and carved away everything else except the door from another. The glazing in the open door is a film of Future floor wax.

http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT0705.JPG
Another thing I wanted to correct was the orientation of the sealed beam headlights. The C&O units have them one-on-top of the other, while the Atlas model has them side-by-side. I cut the ends off of the spare shells, and carefully sanded them down until all that was left was a headlight housing. It took a few extra attempts before I had four pieces to install on the two units pictured. To get the light pipes to function, I carefully trimmed off the two light tubes and cleaned the mating surfaces. I saved all of the pieces I trimmed off, and as part of the final assembly, I slid them back into the holes with a drop of Future floor wax on them. Hopefully I will never have to take them back out.

No. 5591 was painted at the same time. I cut the exhaust stack off of the spare shell so that I could rotate it 90 degrees. The C&O units had the exhaust stack oriented lengthwise, unlike the Atlas model. The exhaust support was made from brass wire.
http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/500/PICT06911.JPG

Visible inside the open door is part of the Atlas chassis. I added traction tires to the no.2 axle, but there is very little opportunity to add weight to these. The only places possible are some small spaces behind each set of steps, unless you completely fill the cab behind the windows. I sure wish Atlas would offer a grooved wheel set with pointed axles for these - I hate cutting my own grooves for traction tires.

I guess I had never seen the Bachmanns before - without the C&O For Progress logo it means that these hoppers date back before the 1950's. These would fit in with pre-1950's steam operations as well as 1950's operations. The C&O For Progress logo was added in the 1950's, so my three-bay Micro Trains and Roundhouse hoppers with this logo won't get too much weathering. Thanks for posting the pic!

I've got some Microscale decal sets (number 60-145). These are supposed to be good for hoppers from 1935 to 1956. I have some undecorated Atlas 90 ton hoppers, but they're a little more modern than my "main" layout theme of early 1950's. I guess they'll work out OK when I get out my GP30's, GP40's in Chessie System...

That is one good thing about C&O's offset quad hoppers, they can fit a broad range of time periods. They were built in the 1920's, rebuilt in the 40's, and lasted into the Chessie era (the last being retired in 1974). There were also some that never received the For Progress logo. I plan to add a couple of the Athearn' HO version to my collection sometime soon.

Seems like they also had a GP9 like that. Then sanity came back to management.*L*

Well as a member for a little while (Sept 2005) but never actually participating until recently I am going through some old posts and catching up, so if you see a reply from a message way back then you will know why I am just now replying.

The main thing about this subject IS you guy's make me SICK! Sick that I do not have all these nice pieces of power and rolling stock you guy's have...lol! Man there IS some GREAT looking stuff here! I might try to post some pics of stuff I have but I have a LONG way to go to catch up to you guys, but give me time...give me time. I am modeling the year 1964, so most of the stuff I am obtaining relates to that time period, so I can use a myriad of rolling stock from the 40's, 50's and into the early 60's until 1964. Same goes for motive power as well, diesels from the 50's right down to 1964 which gives me a lot of choices. I am a Geep 7 & 9 guy since I was around them so much growing up as a kid as my entire family worked for the C&O in West Virginia. Nothing like seeing 4 or 6 Geeps together on a coal train or a time freight! I have so far, 6 Atlas Geep 9's and an MP Fp7 in as far as motive power goes. Rolling stock I have around 53 hoppers, 40' 3 bay rib side, 2 bay fishbellys, and 33' 2 bay arch end offset sides, so I am building a sizeable fleet of hoppers and more to come. I have around 5 wide vision cabs but am going to sell them off on eBay as they will not fit into the era I am going for, most being MT couplers...need some 40's & 50's era steel yellow cabs...do you hear us Atlas! I have a few other C&O cars. Of course I have a bunch of other roads rolling stock as well...so I AM getting there. But the bottomline IS you guys give me a LOT of inspiration and I just wanted you to know that.

I am new on this forum. It looks interesting so I am going to look around for a while. here is a rather busy area on my layout. Iknow the pigs are out of place but they are no longer there.

Now that is a sweet scene! Where did you get the trailors? Did you do the artwork and decals? I would love to have some really good artwork so I can do some in N scale. Welcome aboard and long live the C&O!!

The Chessie Steam Special in N scale. I got the Con Cor set a while back and was disapointed with the engine. They painted a Berkshire and it really didnt look close. The tenders looked really good so I figured if I could come up with a decent looking steamer I could have a decent set. So I had a Bachman 4-8-4 that I used for the mechanism and shell. I moved the sand domes and fabricated some parts. I borrowed some pictures from the internet and made the front emblem with them and also for the emblem on the cylinders. More to come later...

Added MT trucks to the passenger cars. weathered them a bit. Hardwired the tender to the engine. Redid the front emblem on the engine and the back emblem on the observation car. A few other odds and ends.

Les a GREAT scene shot! Love the trailers and I remember seeing them as a young lad! You gotta tell us where you got those or if you did them yourself. Some of these on the old brown TTX 86' would look great! Show us some more scenes!
