If I recall correctly, those skirts didn't last long. Were removed as they hindered maintenance.

Even the trucks on the passenger cars had them. When Kato modeled the N Scale CB&Q baggage cars and coaches they included the extra brackets cast into the ends of the truck frames to hold the skirts. Very nice detail if you are modeling Burlington but a little goofy for any other road that they sold cars for. My Santa Fe cars have CB&Q trucks. :)

I didn't know they put skirts on the E's! No wonder they didn't last long! The ones on the cars didn't last very long either, I'll bet.

I wonder if the skirts were to assist in deflecting road grime, to keep the equipment cleaner longer....

I believe it was mostly for "Streamlined" aesthetics. Not so much actual aerodynamics but the aerodynamic "look” is what they were after. Turns out it was not worth the effort.

Are the skirts in the picture above attached to the engine frame or attached to the engine trucks (like the cars)?

At Espee, even the simple skirts on GP9/F unit frame/fuel tanks were removed.

These went along with the art movement of the period. Right now, I cannot think of it's name. I want to say art deco. But don't feel as though it's correct?

Without a search of 20 pages of Zephyr photos, I believe it was somewhere in MN, on the Afternoon or Morning Zephyr. The skirts look classy in my book!
