I was recently looking through the archive photos on the Southern railway historical web sight and they had several photos of 2-8-8-2 steamers. Do any of you know if the Southern ever ran these locomotives?
Thanks for any info

Yes they did have Class Ls mallets in use up until the early 1950's in the Applachian coal fields. They also had some steam "tractors", that is I believe some 2-10-2(0-8-2)'s with the latter engine mounted under the tenders.
Being a "flatlander" will have to leave it to a Southern steam fan to provide more info on their articulated steam.

A friend here in Knoxville tells me that they ran a lot from Asheville down to Atlanta and on to Birmingham. Also he told me his dad worked on some running long strings of cars over the hump at the Sevier Yard here. Also they'd run them down to Chattanooga with empties. I'll email him a link to this thread. Perhaps he'll tell us more...
