Hello all. I am trying to put together a family tree of sorts for all the major railroads in the US and Canada. I would like to know what rail roads merged to form other rail roads, or what roads were bought out by other roads. For example, I know BNSF was formed by a merger between Berlington Northern and Santa Fe.
I know B&O was one of the oldest RR's in the country. What can you tell me about the history of the B&Ol?? What happened to it? Who bought it out?

I will be researching this on the internet, but any info you can add would be greatly appreciated. I will be asking a similar question of each of the major Roads in the other Rail Road forums, so please feel free to lay out as much info as you like.

Thanks All!

C&O gained 61% of B&O common stock in 1961. B&O/C&O merged on New Year's Eve, 1962. Feb. 4, 1963 C&O formally took control of B&O. In 1967, the ICC gave approval for C&O/B&O to take over the Western Maryland. Became Chessie System in 1971-72.

Didn't they retain a seperate identity until CSX? I seem to recall engines with sublettering for many years after the early 1970's?

The C&O controlled the B&O; the B&O wasn't technically part of C&O. "Chessie System" was really a new corporate branding more than anything else. The B&O was eventually completely absorbed by the C&O, less than a year before Chessie was merged into CSX.

Here is a link to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad historical society. It is a very accurate time line that includes all acquisitions by the railroad. It is the same one that is displayed at the museum.

That's what I'd thought to be true.
