Shortly after their merger with the UP, a few of their geeps made it to Southern California...to work on local freight service...here is a local , rounding Santa Fe's "Hobart Tower"...circa January 1984

Here is another image of the same train...not as zoomed in or tight as the first...

Thanks
Sent this to my buddy UP4526. He'll really foam over these! Who knows maybe he'll even post a few of his. Lets hope so.

Great shots. I remember watching those units head east in the summer of '83' while all west bound trains had the yellow replacements. The U23B's and U30B's sat in Portola for a while before heading to Salt Lake. The smaller geeps remained for a while before going east themselves. Tough time for a die hard WP fan and employee. Some of those units returned in UP paint, and their 5 chime horns replaced with UP's standard 3 chime. As time progressed they lost their nose lights, with UP785 being the last one to keep its working gyra light. Thank you for the memories.

Yes it was back then...for locals and such...while they had a small classification yard only a few miles from there. Not sure what UP does now.
