Here is a copy of a snow report I got on the forum at Altamont Press web site. It is by a professional meteorologist from the san Francisco Bay area. This explains why there is a need for flangers and Jordan spreaders.

Mike Pechner posts regarding: WINTERAIL PM SLIDE SHOW
There is 120" of snow on the ground at Norden, 50" at Blue Canyon west of Switch 9, and l5" at Truckee. On the Natron Cut-off, Pengra Pass has 70" on the ground. Seasonal total at both around 375" Hope this helps, Mike Pechner, Norden Weatherman

If the storms are spread out and there is not an excessive amount in one storm it can usually be taken care of by the flangers and Jordan spreaders.

I was reading more of the book Emire Express about the building of the transcontinental in the US by the Central Pacific (from the west) and Union Pacific (from the east). The Central Pacific crews would often encounter snow in the mountains from August to May (although it usually only stopped work from November to March).

Anyway, in the spring of 1868 they got 13 feet of snow in 3 days!

I have seen some beautiful pictures of Espee engines going through Donner Pass and throwing snow from the plows like a giant bow wave. It was very impressive, indeed.

I always wondered who had the stamina to go up there and take the pictures!
