I'm doing a research project on the Sacramento Rail Yard which was initially used/built by the Central Pacific, bought by Southern Pacific, bought by Union Pacific. I'm looking for the earliest maps of the general area that I can find, preferably even before there was much, if any, construction. There must have been an initial survey of the landscape by Judah or one of his engineers, I would think. Any notes, maps, or anything else pictorial from the very earliest stage of ownership would be helpful.

I know there are repositories in the CSRM, etc. but I'm looking for someone with specific knowledge of specific maps, please.

Thanks for the help.

Have you checked the book Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad
by David Haward Bain? The book contains some early maps and if I remember correctly some drawings by Judah. Also, the bibliography may have a reference for what you are looking for. Good luck.
