Apparently there are some Tunnel Motors which have been repainted in SP grey, with SP on the sides. It seems that this is to use up some left-over paint, as it is a hazardous material to dispose of. Pity they didn't use it when it was still Southern Pacific http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

They are pretty cool....they look a lot better then if they had gotten the yellow treatment! I had heard that some SP guys in Roseville had a burst of espee pride, and decided to use up some gray and red paint stocks lying around. Supposedly, UP higher-ups learned of this, and advised them to control their feelings of pride, so I guess there won't be any more repaints like these. http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif At least one of them has a white side-sill stripe, as well. Too bad they didn't have any speed lettering stencils lying around, to go all out!

Yes, I heard about the instruction to curb the SP pride!
Like I said, pity they didn't have the same pride earlier http://www.trainboard.com/rolleyes.gif

I have actually gone up to Donner Pass and photographed these units. Sure beats sitting on your ass on your computer.

Welcome to Trainboard, BRubino! Here's a link to a page with SD40T-2's in all kinds of SP schemes, including the "Economy" scheme: http://espee.railfan.net/spsd40t-2.html

Thanks, Paul. I was looking for that site, and found it but didn't scroll down far enough! Knew I had seen 'em http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
I think they look rather good, but that is probably because they are clean http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

That's great that people still have the elbow grease and courage to do that these days. I seem to see those locos all of the time, living right above roseville as I do. A couple years back, I guess before they got the lettering on, The "SP" on the side was mocked up with a whole bunch of masking tape, couldn't get a picture though, unfortuantely. Maybe somebody else saw it.
I feel lucky that roseville has so much pride, there seems to be no lack of the scarlet and grime espee units around here, obviously stuck in helper service. As a matter of fact, just today I saw a lone consist of four tunnel motors, some with the repainted "SP" on the side. Sometimes I think the dirtier the locos are and the more grafitti, the better they look.
Long live Espee!!

Derek, I do so agree :D
By the way, a warm welcome to Trainboard smile.gif You are lucky living near Roseville, I am a few thousand miles away, so it is good to hear about your railroad sightings here on trainboard smile.gif
