View Full Version : Rolling Stock with old paint jobs

Lately I've seen a few trains coming through Knoxville with many boxcars and hoppers in older Southern, NS, and NW paint schemes. For example "Southern Serves the South"
"Green Light..." etc. It seemed unusual to see so many old rolling stock concentrated together. Any ideas why? Would they be on their way to get repainted or is it not too unusual. I'm new to this so your input is welcomed. Thanks.

Good morning Bierbass and welcome to the board.
I'm still new to the board myself.
Perhaps Southern had a number of these in a 'stored' status on a no longer used line.
This they did on the old Piedmont line here in upstate South Carolina. These coupled together cars went for miles being un-coupled only for grade crossings.

Hello Bierbass, and as per Larry - welcome.
Sigh - it is so sad to hear that "...gives a greenlight..." is so old! The thought just occured to me the other night that I will need to retire just those same cars that I currently have with that same motto hopefully to be replaced with the old round herald or the big block "Southern" without the "... gives a greenlight...".
Mayhaps someone modernizing their Southern layout to circa 1969 or later could offer a trade on a one-for-one basis?

I have been paying attention and photographing a lot of boxcars lately... you are right! There are a lot of old Southern boxcars still out there!

Thanks for the welcome. I never thought of them storing them on an unused line. I sort of wondered if they are being rounded up to be repainted or scraped. Still being new to this I've noticed most rolling stock doesn't display a road name any more. I've got some pictures, some of them pretty bad as I was far from the track. I had to chase down the train when I spotted it on my way to work, breaking traffic laws in the process graemlins/shakehead.gif Can anyone tell me how to post them here. Thanks in advance.

I saw an "original" NS covered hopper on a grain train this week... (Large NS letters)

Harold - Just think if it was red and black (the old Norfolk-Southern), the paint job is at least 33 years old!

Yes, the outline of the NS letters was still there, as well as the light coloring of the original letters,...
