Happier days on the Southern,,,

Harold...many thanks for posting the SOU unit pic. You're right, those were happier days for one of the best run, most profitable railroads in America! With our new forums, I hope we'll be better able to serve all the fans of the NS and predecessors in the best manner possible, and all in one place.

Here's my experience: I never worked for a RR, just grew up near the Southern yard.... (actually the "original" Norfolk Southern" ) ... I enjoyed seeing the high hood "tuxedo" units, especially "rare" units, such as the GP50's, GP49's (or GP39X's), and SD45's..... Seeing the N&W units was a treat.... knowing that all of them would disappear under the NS banner was another impetus to get photos...

I agree that the high hood Southern units look good. But we often find that railfans and railroad staff have opposing views of equipment smile.gif

Welcome aboard 8Nsnd, maybe you can give us some more "inside information" on working on the railroad smile.gif

Welcome aboard 8Nsnd, maybe you can give us some more "inside information" on working on the railroad smile.gif The high nose units provide very limited visibility so you cannot see whats in front of you so well it takes both crewmembers especially on curves, and comfort wasnt a priority. Also the NS has only recently gone to chemical toilets hence the problem with the bucket .

those units are horrible, certainly you could admire an engine w/ function and comfort...last night, we were shifting in the yd and it was all we could do to see out of that piece of junk..we have been cursed with using that "thing" the last couple of nights..and the comfort, there is none.the bucket, yes-i know they have retro-fitted the old engines, but it is the thought, thats how they think of their employees...sit on this bucket, s*^*^* in this bag, keep it for the next 11 hrs..and turn it in when you are done graemlins/shakehead.gif .seriously... theyre junk!!! and graemlins/097.gif thanks for the welcome

Hey guys, I did not say the NS high hoods were without their faults,,,, I just said they were unique & look cool. I can only imagine the fun of poor visibility, especially running long hood forward! :eek:
