Rich Melvin has announced on other railfan boards that the 765 overhaul (rebuild, actually) is finally complete, and the engine will be steamed up on the weekend of Oct. 29 and 30 at their shops. You folks in the midwest should get some photos of this event. It has been years since she ran. Here's a link to the event.

Couldn't get that link to work. Tried this one: http://www.765.org/
I wonder what plans they might have, for any excursions?

Ken, I belong to WAY too many of these groups, and got an invitation to the 765 group's annual banquet and business meeting in Ft. Wayne on Nov. 12. Don't think I'll make it, but supposedly future plans and excursions will be discussed. I questioned Rich Melvin over on the Chaski board about 765 making it to the OC for next year's NRHS convention and Rich didn't sound the least bit optimistic. Something about the engine doesn't run on coal, it runs on money, and the NRHS wasn't willing to foot the bill. :(

Bummer. :( After all that hard work, and money spent, I hope they can find a way to get her out on the high iron again. Soon.

The NKP 587 pulled the fair train for the State Fair in Indianapolis for years. It's been down since 2003 due to a federally mandated boiler tube refitting. There is a movie out called 587:The Great Train Robbery that can be purchased at www.587THEMOVIE.com (http://www.587themovie.com/) about two kids and an ol'timer that steal the loco from a scrapping. Cute movie, and my kids love it. If you're ever in the Indy area, you can visit the 587 at the Indiana Transportation Museum (http://www.itm.org/). It is truly a beautiful machine, and a celebrity of sorts around here.

Black Cloud, we recently had a discussion on the 587 and other Mikados over on the New York Central fallen flag forum:
