first of all, http://www.rr-fallenflags.org is the address.

And second, I don't think the N&W ever had SD50's. NS does.

I know what you are talking about!

The N&W received some "test bed" SD50's that were informally called SD50s ("s" as in short!). They were built on SD40-2 underframes.

I think there were only 5 or 6 of them... I'll have to check some references to be sure.

N&W bought 6 SD50s models 6500-6505 (built on SD40-2 length frames as noted above).

I can't locate any pics on the web (except in NS), but I do have pics at home. Email me if you can't find any.

I have a N&W book, but no personal photos to share. In fact, I have very few N&W units, as they rarely made it down in these parts. :(

In my copy of N&W Second Generation Diesels, there are 3 photos of SD50s' in NW paint.

I am also thinking there was an article in Diesel Era about these units, but I have not had a chance to find it.

I have a Terry Kirkland photo of N&W #6500 with NW on the nose. Very nosey shot and will have to move it over to the hard drive to post it here.

Well here it is. Not a very detailed pic, but it does show the N&W SD50S paint. I don't know where Terry took this pick, but we do have the 264 milepost as a clue. Anyone?

That's a Southern milemarker, 364... near Harrisburg, NC on the Peidmont Div... if you really want to get in depth, it's most likely taken from the Robinson Church Rd grade crossing,

Given that it's two SD50S' on a freight train, at the earliest summer 1983 (the SD50S' were retrofitted by EMD with the angular 'free-flow' blower ducts in 11/82), this would jive, as the SD50S were used in pairs out of Roanoke at the time on any train (they were later used with C36-7s (i.e, one SD50S, one C36-7) on coal trains exclusively, then for a time assigned to marrowbon trains... they were in NS paint shortly thereafter.

I have various EMD builder slides and prints of N&W SD50S', as well as quite a few detail shots of 6504 in NS. I'll have to get it online...
